Show STRIKE IN ST LOUIS I t Efforts to Settle Trouble by Arbitration Arbitra-tion Fails St Louis May 12An earnest effort was made today to settle tho strike by means of arbitration These efforts came to nothing however as the strikers strik-ers and street car companies could not be brought together on any proposition Involving tho recognition of the union In the manner desired A few cases of violence were reported from various parts of the city and some shooting was done but without serious results A number of arrests on minor I charges growing out of the present difilcullies were reported No street cars will bo run Sunday Chief of Police Campbell considered it necessary that his men should have some rest and refused to detail them to keep the street car lines open tomorrow to-morrow Finding that the chief would not bo moved from his purpose the street railway people decided lo make no attempt to keep tho lines open Nine men succeeded In shattering a number of switches on Paapln street tonlghl They worked openly and without with-out being molested by the large crowd whom the explosion of the charges had attracted When the police came to tho scene the men scattered and escaped es-caped Several Innocent bystanders were clubbed as the oluccoats cleared the streets |
