Show DEMANDS REDRESS Mutual Life Insurance Company Wants Prussia Called to Time New York May 12The petition of the Mutual Life Insurance company of New York to Congress by Representative Representa-tive James S Sherman of Now York asking for an Inquiry to the treatment received by that institution at the hands of the Prussian Government is exciting great interest here The petition shows that the Mutual Life Insurance company Is transacting business In Great Britain France Austria Aus-tria Hungary Italy Belgium Holland Denmark Norway and Sweden under the sanction and approval of those countries and done so In accordance with those principles of reason and justice jus-tice which govern the conduct of enlightened en-lightened nations Not so however in Prussia In 18SS the company entered Prussia after being be-ing subjected to a close and exhaustive examination After relying upon the good faith of the Prussian Government the company purclic1 a lot of ground with suitable building in Berlin for an office and Invested largely In Prussian securities believing that it would bo permitted to conduct Its business un disturbed in accordance with the comity comi-ty of nations Unmindful of the principles of equity and fair dealing the Prussian Government Govern-ment submitted the r submited company a long series of impositions and exactions culminating on August 11 1S05 by its actual expulsion without a hearing from the Kingdom of Prussia The Mu tual Life had not changed its method of doing business its good standing had not been Impaired since Is standing tigation by the Government and when a licenso was issued to It One pre t for expelling the company com-pany was that it Issued tontine policies des although every facility had been given the Government to ascertain that the charge was without founda ton When It abandoned this conten tion the Government began to impose new conditions and exactions never previously suggested and which the Prussian authorities knew could not be obeyed under the companys charier While the company admits the technical tech-nical power of the Prussian Govern mont to expel the Mutual Life from Prussia upon a false pretext it re spectfully submits to the Congress of the United Slates that such treatment by a supposedly friendly state is J Inde I feasible In the forum of international Intrnatonal comity and unworthy of any enlight ened and civilized en1rh clvIze state The company I calls for inquiry and Investigation and a redress for such grievances On mo lon Ha Dctltlon was referred to the Committee on Interstate and Foreign I Commerce |
