Show THE ACADEMY SIDE Statement of 0 A Kirkhom Manager Man-ager of Academy Association Manager O A Kirkman of the Academy Acad-emy Athletic association makes the following fol-lowing statement giving the Provo side of the caseIn case-In a recent letter from Mr Nelson DIckerman of the managing committee of the University team to Mr Kirk barn manager of the Academy Athletic Athlet-ic association occurs the following statement 1 I presume It Is fully understood this contest will bo between regularly registered students of the respective schools from which the teams are sent The academy came to Salt Lake In good faith prepared to act on this condition con-dition and presented 1 list at thQ contestrnts countersigned by the registrar regis-trar oC the Institution as being bona fldo students When the University of Utah presented Us list which was not done till a late hour there appeared the names of two students from Cedar City Naturally the academy students wore surprised at so barefaced a piece of trickery and objected to these menThe men-The argument that they were students of the University by virtue of their being be-ing enrolled in the branch normal at Cedar Oity was regarded as a mere subterfuge and as betraying n desperate desper-ate strait of things on the University of Utah side The academy has branch Institutions Institu-tions in Icaver Vernal Ephralm Arizona and Mexico Would the University Uni-versity of Utah have tolerated n selection selec-tion from all these schools under the conditions named In their letter As a matter of fact these very men recently had a contest with the Beaver branch of the academy and were defeated de-feated The victors from that school might have been included in the academy acad-emy list had the academy consented to I any such doubledealing but we came here to put up a fair and square contest con-test according to the terms of tho agreement l When the University of Utah com milteo therefore declared that unless the Cedar men were permitted to enter I the contest would be declared off the 1 academy could not as a matter of honor do otherwise than withdraw Wo withdrew because wo regard the holding up of a principle of honor 03 greater than any victory we might have gained through truckling to unfair un-fair methods Respectfully O A KIRKHAM Manager B Y Academy Athletic Association As-sociation |
