A PITCHED BATTLE Pinkerton and Gtvniblcrs have a Lively Scrap Chicago Sept 1 A rAtched battle between the Pinkeitons and attaches of Harry Varnells gambling house at Madison and Clark streets was fought this afternoon during a raid on the place Varnells place was filled when a score detectives headed by Matt Pinkerton entered The occupants armed themselves with chairs and other weapons and charged the Intruders Drawing their clubs the officers resisted the attack for fifteen minutes Many of the combatants were knocked down and pounded The detectives finally conquered making numerous arrests The Varnell people retalllated by caus ing the arrest of Matt Pinkerton Varnell is exwarden of the county poor house and has served a term in the penitentiary for boodling
