| Show ELY 1 y VINDICATED I No Foundation For the Sensational Charges Brgmght Against H madison m-adison Wis Sept 18The i report of the Ely investigation committee was submitted to the full board of university univer-sity regents this afternoon I finds Dr Ely had no connection with the printers print-ers strike did not advise or abet strikers strik-ers and walking delegates or make demand I de-mand on proprietors that their office should be made union I further finds there Is no foundation for the charge that Dr Ely believes in strikes or boycotts boy-cotts or any of the other charges that were made by Superintendent Wells that the charge a sort of moral justi fication for attacks upon life am property pro-perty is supported by the teaching or practice of the University of Wisconsin Wiscon-sin Is absolutely false The committee com-mittee say they are surprised to find that during the last eighteen months < nearly 200 books and articles have been I published by the professors and students stu-dents on various subjects The committee com-mittee state that they cannot for a moment mo-ment think of recommending the dismissal dis-missal of a teacher even if some of his opinions should in some quarters be regarded re-garded as visionary They say they would feel themselves unworthy of the positions they hold if they did not believe be-lieve in progress in all departments of knowledge They believe the great university I uni-versity of Wisconsin should ever encourage that continual and fearless sifting and winnowing ways by which alone truth can be found In closing the report the committee says We regret that our appointment appoint-ment for such an investigation should have been considered necessary but will now state that we entered on it with a sole desire to ascertain the truth in regard to the charges preferred We are pleased to say that the result is a complete vindication of Dr Ely and the teachings and practices of our university uni-versity |
