Show Volunteer GrantlnioliiGP Esther Daub, Farmington, a devoted volunteer in the Monte Vista School for the retarded, located in Farmington, Far-mington, is commended for her work with these children. RULON SMITH, head teacher and Beverly Lombar-di, Lombar-di, teacher, praise this great volunteer grandmother for her work with the students. To quote Esther Daub, "After many years of employment, companionship in the home and outside activities, ac-tivities, to be left alone with no one but myself to do for, 1 decided it was better to do something to keep mvself physically and mentally occupied. oc-cupied. 1 contacted the Retired Re-tired Senior Citizen Volunteer Program office in Farming-ton. Farming-ton. THEY INFORMED me they needed volunteers at the Monte Vista School to work with the children. After contacting Rulon Smith, at the school, he said they would be glad to have me. My first day at school, more than a year ago was on Valentines Day, and 1 attended attend-ed the Valentine dance and party. It was really an experience watching the children enjoying themselves. How happy they were and lovable in their friendships with each other. r- - - if 1 A s ESTHER DAI I) 1 WENT home thinking how good and satisfying this was and made arrangements to ride the school bus, so no transportation problems. 1 also pick up a small neighbor child Teddy, '.vho is a pupil at the school. The group 1 joined has 18 children with ages from five years to twenty-five, including includ-ing Charlotte, few could talk. THEY WERE the most lovable, friendly youngsters to be around. I got to know them, their different habits and wavs so well that we did not really need any verbal communication. You get to know their limitations limi-tations and capabilities so there is no difficulty in working with them. 1 ENJOY and admire the great teachers and especially Beverly Lombard!, our program director who does a wonderful job with the help of the other devoted teachers. During the time I have been there. I have seen some remarkable improvements in some of the children and what a satisfaction this would be to the parents. THIS IS a gratifying and enjoyable work for me. the children give a lot of love. They crave attention that grandparents can give and call me grandma, like normal children. This is a good thing to do and 1 believe 1 am doing some good for the children and helping the teachers loo." MRS. DALB also spends many hours each week with volunteer work at the Golden Years Center in Bountiful. Volunteer workers are always al-ways needed. It is such a rewarding experience to give a few hours to helping others, kj |
