Show By DAVE WIGHAM Following a public hearing at which about a dozen citizens voiced their concerns, the North Salt Lake city council adopted new water rates for the city. NEW RATES, which go into effect May 1, will be $3.50 for the first 10,000 gallons used and 30 cents for every additional 1,000 gallons used. Present rates are $2.50 for the first 8,000 gallons and 20 cents for each additional thousand. THE COUNCIL informed the citizens group that the water department of the city has operated in the red for the past 12 years. Reason for the increase is the increase in costs in labor, power and costs to repair or replace old lines. ONLY WAYS to cover for these additional increases. increase the rates, or have a bond issue to cover costs of replacing worn out lines. At first the city council considered having different rates for the people below 400 East and those above 400 East. REASONING for the difference is that those above 400 East require a pressure pump to get the water to service the area. This pump is a high pressure pump which runs 24 hours a day. The council decided, however, this way they would be dividing the city up into two sides, and they didn't want to do that. THE COUNCIL also formally passed an ordinance adopting the Utah Traffic Code-Rules of the Road 1974 as the city's traffic code. All laws of the city previously adopted which are in 1 conflict or inconsistant with the provisions of the newly adopted code were repealed, dw - |
