Show vuT O) ' 1 1 S S 1 " The recent county band festival, fes-tival, held at Clearfield High School on April 1st was unique in several respects. It was the first night festival for senior high bands in many years, and many adults from all parts of the county were in attendance. All bands were introduced by their high school principals. One of the adjudicators. Dr. Steven W. Allen, was a former band director in the county. BOUNTIFUL AND View-mont View-mont High Schools received a perior (I) ratings based both upon their concert program and upon their ability to sight read. For both directors, this was their second straight superior ratings rat-ings with Davis County Schools. Michael Murphy formerly for-merly from Texas has taught for just two years; both at Viewmont, Dean Wakefield is concluding his second year at Bountiful after a highly successful suc-cessful career in Southern California. Four Junior High bands received superior ratings at the March 31 Festival, held at Davis High School. DAN RICH directed his Bountiful Junior band to a seldom obtained I-plus rating. Robert Matheson and the Millcreek group and Keith Brimhall and the Kaysville Junior musicians both received I ratings. Michael Packham directs the North Davis band which received a I-rating. I-rating. This is the first time in recent years that a junior high band from the north end of the county has attained such an honor. As far as I can find out, our Composer's Festival, held Thursday, March 25 was a first for our state. THERE WERE 7 student compositions entered and presented. After each presentation, presen-tation, Dr. Bradshaw, composition com-position instructor at BYU, commented on the excellence of the composition and made suggestions for improvements. improve-ments. The students also had the opportunity to listen to one of Dr. Bradshaw's compositions with a brief synopsis of what the composer was attempting to achieve. MY EVALUATION of the festival was that it was most rewarding and profitable and' the quality of student composition com-position was surprisingly . good. The year's Choral Festivals will be held on April 13, and 14. The junior choirs will congregate at Davis High School on the 13 and demonstrate demons-trate their performance and sightreading prowess before judges Ronald Wooden from Weber State College, and Marilyn Lund and Juergen Sass from the Ogden School District. ON APRIL 14 the senior choirs will perform at Bountiful Boun-tiful High School. Judges for this 1976 event will be Newel Weight from the U. of U., Ed Sandgren from Orem High School and James Miller from Skyline High School. |
