Show Sfcr-i Davis Connty I, USSlI TOGFSSJT By DAVE WIGHAM It took the Salt Lake City people long enough to fu, ' it out, maybe one of these years someone out tti. . will figure out a way to make money and entertain basketball fans. rermn n, WHAT I'M talking about is the basketball toura. that the Salt Lake City schools are involved in rtT1. ing week. All the schools in Salt Lake, such as Hi2' East, West, Skyline and the others are involved in a Zi long tournament to determine the city champion V year was the first year and the success was great Mo was made, the coaches got a look at the others and 2 fans got a chance to view a lot of top notch games Why not then have a county championship in Davi. County each year. That's right, have a tournament wiih the six schools from the County each year and haw i traveling trophy for the winner. ROTATE which school hosts the tournament each year and split the gate money between the schools. The lanj would eat it up. The players would probably like trw idea, it would give more meaning to pre-season gama As they stand now everyone says that pre-season is a joke, nothing comes of it, but a tournament would m that little something extra. I think that pre-season does a lot for a program, but I'm also in favor of the County tournament. The coaches will say that they already have to play certain teams twice so why play them a third time. In region play Bountiful, Viewmont, Clearfield and Layton all play one another a couple of times. So do the Davis and Woods Cross clubs. So why play before they have to is the Question the coaches bring up. J TO MAKE money is a good reason. Look around the gyms during pre-season games, not many paying cus- f tomers, but a County tournament would probably pack a j few gyms around the area. Coaches also travel many miles in pre-season to see t their league opponents play to scout, why not save tine and travel and put them under one roof for a week? MAYBE the coaches have a point in not wanting to play I the tournament. Salt Lake tried it once and liked it. I only hope in the near future someone in Davis County tries the idea. The fans want it, the players would like it, the coaches are skeptical. Two out of three isn't bad. |
