Show Mies E3es3dl By DAVE WIGHAM Look out Weber High School, the Viewmont Vikings basketball team is getting up a head of steam and heading right at your club. After dropping a couple of close games, a one pointer to Brighton and a five pointer to Provo, the Vikes have come on strong to blow their last three opponents off the floor. MOMENTUM is definitely in the Vike comer going into this week's region opener at the Viewmont gym at 7: 30. People knew the Vikes had some talented people in their comer, but just how good they were no one really knew. After all the Vikes only have one returnee from last year, that being Kevin Hess. But this team is starting to jell, and that means problems for Region One clubs. AFTER the loss to Provo, their second of the young season, a couple of the players were talking to me when one remarked, "I'm beginning to wonder if wc can win." Before I say anything the other player jumped in and noted "we'll win." That's been the attitude of this club ever since as they have come on to down the likes of Skyline, Orem and Granite. THE ONE thing that makes this club work is their ability to play team ball. TheVikes are about as balanced a ball club as you will find On any given night anyone 'could be the leading scorer, but more times than not several of the players will be in double figures. They are unselfish and enjoy playing ball together. Hess has emerged as the leader of the club, his experience is paving off as he holds the club together. But right behind are the likes of Cal Curtis, Mike Yates, John Higley, Cory Hanks, Tod Jones and many others. The names don't stop here, people like Brad Thacker, Gil Hodges, Kellv Downs, Tim Miller, Doug Day and John Skedros give the Vikes a lot of depth. HIGLEY is the type of exciting ex-citing guard that makes things happen, his hustle and enthusiasm are something to behold. Hanks, Hess, Yates and Curtis give the Vikings some tall talented timber up front to battle on the boards. cellent outside shooters. This Vike team has everything a coach could want. WEBER isn't about to forfeit for-feit the game, they'll give the Vikes a battle. Leading them is a 66" center by the name of Brad Hall, who could give the Vikes problems. One question mark will be the availability of Mike Montgomery, Mont-gomery, a big 6"3" forward, who is still suffering from a football knee injury. If he is healthy the Vikes will have all they can handle up front. The Warrior backcourt duo of Trawick and Coleman are adequate but not too flashy. Coleman is a 5'9" jitterbug type player while Trawick is a good shooter. ON THE surface the Vikes have too much talent, too much depth, plus the home court advantage will probably be too much for the Warriors to overcome. The Viking crowds have been great this year. |
