Show By DAVE WIGHAM ' All indications point to a Clearfield victory when the " Falcons travel up to Ogden : this Friday to take on the Bonneville Lakers in the 1 opening round of Region One '. basketball competition. IF THE pre-season scores . are any indication then the ' Falcons should be heavy ; favorites as they have shown ' a lot of promise in the warm-up warm-up games, i Coach Reid isn't all that happy about the results of their early games though as '' the Falcons dropped a couple .; of games that they probably : should have won. THIS Clearfield team has . the makings of a great club, ' already they downed the I Bingham team that is sup-; sup-; posed to be one of the best, if i not the best, club in the 4A : ranks. Last Friday the Fal-' Fal-' cons manhandled the Miners 84-68, then they lost a one-t one-t poin' heartbreaker at West on - Saturday. ; Maybe the club was a little '- down after knocking off the Bingham team the night : before, one thing for sure the : Falcons won't be down when ; they take on the Lakers. THE trademark of Falcon basketball in the past few years has been patience and defense, this year is no exception ex-ception as they play a very tough sticky defense. If you don't believe me write to Bingham and ask one Mr. Roberts, he's the young man that's supposed to be the best big man in the state. When you stop and realize that Roberts is around 6' 8" tall, which i9 about four inches bigger than any Falcon, Fal-con, and the Clearfield bunch held him to just 14 points, then you can start to realize the type of defense that they are capable of playing. BEHIND, or in front whichever way you want to look at it, every successful basketball team is an unselfish unsel-fish playmaker type of guard. Clearfield has one such player in Darren Parry, who is like another coach on the floor. Darren is a very smart ballplayer who directs both the offense and the defense for Coach Reid. IN THE middle for Clearfield Clear-field and up front are the likes of Roger Vincent, Scott Wallace, Brian Johnson and Kelly Parsons. All enjoyed 11111 great games against the Bingham club and all are capable of putting the points on the board. Bonneville will counter with their own talented players such as Bart Hodges, Kurt Child and John Stevens. The Lakers now sport a 4-1 pre-season mark, which is one of the best in Region One, but they haven't played the type of competition that the Falcons have met. IN pre-season polls the Clearfield bunch were always mentioned near the top. Coach Reid does a tremendous tremen-dous job of getting the most out of his players and they force their opponents into making mistakes on the court. Look for the Falcons to win game one of the region wars. Game time is 7: 30 up in Laker gym. |
