Show Changing Scenery and Customs Described in Trip Thru Europe Mr and Mrs Ted Draper stationed sta sta- In fn Germany with an Artillery Artillery Ar Ar- tillery outfit of the U TJ S. S Army r recently took a very interesting trip to several European points Mrs MIs Draper the former Hazel Harding writes so well of the trip that it makes outstanding reading We left Zirndorf on the March Carmella and Bill BUI Rosevear Rosevear Rose Rose- vear went with us In our little black car so it was a pretty tight squeeze by the time we got suitcases suItcases suitcases suit suIt- cases umbrellas duffle duffie bags gas cans and arid three big sacks of food into the car When we left It was seas raining Tike like crazy but by the time we hit Munich tt Jt was 70 degrees We decided to go to Berchtesgaden a military resort the first day and stay there It Is only a few miles milles from tram Salzburg Austria In Salzburg we saw Mozart's home and a big statue of him 1 Changing Scenery Austria Is la really a beautiful country Everything in the valleys valleys val val- val val- leys was starting to get green and it looked so pretty However we dId have a lot of trouble getting Into Italy from Austria because the passes over the mountains were still tIll closed We tried three different passes before we finally got across and then we had to put the car on ona ona ona a train and go through a tunnel The e snow was really deep Our first glimpse of Italy was really Interesting In Northern Italy where we crossed the border there are a lot of valleys made out cut of rocks Rock Rack castes and everything I felt badly that we never got any pictures of that section but it was too late In the evening when we got there One thing ng that really amazes amazed me about Europe Is the way the countries change It seems that as soon on as you go across a border the scenery and customs change The second night we stayed Ina in ina ina a city about 20 miles outside of Venice and the next morning we drove Into Venice That mornIng morn morn- Ing lag we learned our l lesson SOn about eating breakfast in the hotel hotd Ted and I had orange Juice and toast and it cost coat us We almost almost almost al al- al- al most fainted After Ater that we ate breakfast in the car Venice la Is fascinating You ha haw have to leave your car In a garage on the out outskirts of town then you OU take a water bus bw Into the center of the city We saw W a Coca Cola boat boM and all aU kind kindt of things Everything Ev U L done by boat because there ent are no roads road ro di at alL aU aLI gondola for an n hour beta and Wid went around the caned canals ta to that It WU really fun 1 procession We AW w a 1 funeral True The ea casket et and od flowers were In one boat and the mourners were in boats oats behind them Our gon gondolier was real cute only one problem problem problem-he he couldn't speak English Glass Gla Factory We saw a glass factory and watched them making glass They really reaDy have to be artists to make the things the way they do After leaving Venice we went to Florence Italy That Is the most beautiful city I have hav ever seen I have never seen so many beautiful mansions in my life They grow a Q lot of grapes in that area and th the hills hUls are really pret pret- ty In Florence we had our f freal first real experience with what we called hustlers We pulled into Florence and stopped to study a map of the city A guy pulled up to the side of ot the car and told us he worked for tor a travel agency and since it was an Italian holiday hollday they were closed He said he would take us to tin an inexpensive pension like a rooming house We stayed there but found he had told us usa usa a lot of ot lies to get us to stay there So we learned our lesson about hustlers bustiers At this pension on we got our first real Italian meal The Italians always d l wine with their me media and they thought we were re very strange They serve spaghetti or la la- I as an appetizer then they bring the meat usually chicken lor or veal then the salad and final final- ly 1 d dessert width consists tA of a bowl of fresh fruit Imle I 1 almost nOI forgot I r t the ro rolis hArd hArdas Ani Anis f M s a rock rocky wr with butter When you 10 en enter d a restaurant In Italy you roo always order ort et a la carte orto 1 In FlorenCe we saw MW Michelangelo's Michelangelo's Michel Michel Michel- angelos angelo's Square an and 4 his hid statue A 1 Alot alot I Ilot lot of 01 fountain and statues a p palace pal pal- I- I I ace with a great t m many gardens containing more IltA status statues and little tittle lit lit- tle From Prom Florence we drove to toRome toRome Rome Rom on a 1 miserable rood road It was surprising to me that there amre so su many mountains mountAIn In Italy For tome some reason reMon I always thought Italy was flat wll with h only rolling roiling hills hUIs In Germany the houses in the countryside are In villages but butIn butto to In n Au Austria rlland and Italy they are all aU allover allover over many of 01 them w way way up in the hilts hills When we arrived on the Ule outskirts outskirts out out- skirts of ot Rome we had a hustler drive up to the side of ot the car carand carand carand and he wanted to take us to a hotel We told him we had reservations reservations res res- Just jut to get rid rut of him Five minutes later here came another enother an other one and we got rid of 01 him himin in the same way St St. St Peter Peters Square I When we got Into the city and I saw the tho bridges St. St Peters Peter's Square and other we were I really Impressed We arrived in Rome on Sunday went to the I USO to get reservations and we i stayed Just lust around the corner i from St. St Peters Peter's Square I All day Monday and Tuesday we went on tours Around round Rome We saw so many interesting thI things s ans and had so much history i crammed into our heads I just lust I wish I could remember it all I cant can't tell teU you too much about I Rome because It would take too tao long but one Interesting thing was the catacombs 1 They are ere the underground burIal burial burial bur bur- ial places for the Christians The Theone Theone Theone I one we went Into had 10 miles mItes of tunnels I got clau claustrophobia In m there but it was interesting The people people peo peo- pie were buried burled all along the I sides of these narrow tunnels The guide said it was all aU dug by hand The early Christians ns hid I there to escape persecution I We went Into the Sistine Chapel I where here Michelangelo painted the ceiling and part of the walls wall I ISee Isee I see all these things and try hard to appreciate them Item as Mr Clark Wright would but I have a hard time Crude Mode of Living Carmella's Cannella's father went over to America from Italy when he was 16 so her grandmother and her uncles are still there They live on the Adriatic seashore about I parallel with Rome and we went there to see her grandmother It was a very Interesting ride We saw the most crude and ancient an an- dent clent mode of living of anything weve we've seen In Europe We saw people living in ha cliff dwellings dwelling They build towns right on the tops of mountains I guess the only way they get to their homes Is by donkey When we got to the town where Carm Camilla's Camillas s 's lives we couldn't find any anyone one who could speak English Carmella had bad a aletter aletter aletter letter written in hi Italian addressed addressed addressed ad- ad ad ad- dressed to one of her cousins We were lucky to find him right away and then we found a lady to interpret interpret in in- and went to find Gran We drove away up in hi the hills hillsand hillsand and then walked about a mile None of her relatives knew she waS was coming so they were r really shocked Her grandmother two uncles uncle and their wives and two children lived in this one little house There were cows chickens pigs PiP sheep and goats In the yard They cooked over a fireplace and got their water from a near near-by welL The be country was real pretty because because be be- cause It was on the seacoast They had four tour hams hanging i in the kitchen and sheep cheeses I I on a shelf shelt It was really quite an I Ion tion and Carmella never knew what to expect We doubled back over to Romend Rome and nd up to Plan Pisa That leaning tower really leans We went Vent up to 10 the top of It ant and we all 11 felt as M if we were ele falling over o The Alps Alp Next we went to Switzerland We were glad to tn leave vo Italy's hills and winding roads roods And Andred Ted red disliked all 11 the trucks on the highway They do all their shipping chipping by truck Switzerland is Ia more advanced than the other countries It has llos hasgood hasgood good highways and Is very beau The pictures of the mountains mountains moun moon mine you see In Switzerland are really typical The l lakes kes th there re are also very beautiful be Again we had trouble getting across the passes and had to take takei a train through tunnel Claustrophobia Claustrophobia Claus Claus- again I Since we couldn't get et across the pass to Bern Dern we had to miss It In Italy we saw women all along the way washing their clothes in the ditch and putting them on the ground to dry They also carry things on their heads We saw one woman walking along the rood road carrying a big I package on her head and reading read readIng ing lag a book I dont don't know ho hoW bOW they do it We had to empty everything out of our car cor while we were in Italy because the thieves would break In If they could see even as much as a Q piece of paper All Allin In all aU we really had a a. wonderful wonderful wonderful won won- trip and g
