Miss Maxinc Elliott comes to the Colonial Col-onial thealnr this evening for throo evening even-ing performances and a matinee on Wednesday Wed-nesday In Frank Stayton's three-act comedy com-edy entitled "The Inferior Sox." which tells In an Interesting and amusing way of the sot convictions of a certain wealthy man whoso aversion to women has assumed as-sumed tho proportions of a mania. The scenes of the play are laid aboard a yacht, where the woman-hater has taJcen refuge in the hope of being rid of tho despised sex. But in a sudden and accidental way S, v.PlIn? woman makes her appearance, oho Is a woman of resource and oventual-ly oventual-ly wins over the womnn hater completely. complete-ly. Miss Ellott is surrounded by practically prac-tically the same, cast that supported her In the New York run of this play. Judging from the fashion in which the Orpheum attendance has started out this week capacity houses will he In order every night. With two headlincr.s in tho form of Charles E. Evans nnd company and the big spectacular production of vToc Hart's "Bathing Girls" on one bill with some other numbers that are emphatically emphatic-ally entertaining it Is the general verdict, ver-dict, thai a good bill is being offered. Hilda Thomas and Lou Hall and Wellington Welling-ton Cross and Lolc Josephlno both have acts that arc screams. The attempt to put In typo the "atmosphere" "at-mosphere" that surges through every moment mo-ment of "The Rose of the Rancho" would be analogous to trying to type tho beauties beau-ties of wonderful California. Of all the stage romances dealing with this section of the count ry. none have such a wealth of action and so marvelous stage setting set-ting as David Belasco and Richard Walton Wal-ton Tulley's splendid story of the days when tills portion of the country was overrun by American land grabbers. The Garrick production of "Tht Rose of the Rancho" is tho most pleasing attraction offered at that house in many months. H. J. Bcanc of the Eastern Theater company, who plays ono of the leading roles in "The Shepherd of the Hills" at the Revler this week, tried the boards of an impromptu amusement place a tent, by the way erected on the corner now occupied by the Knutsford hotel, more than twenty years ago. Later he teamed with Johnny Williams who has won a reputation in vaudeville. "The Arcadians," which comes to tho Salt Lako theater beginning next Wednesday. Wed-nesday. Is well named. There is a strain of Ideal contentment and haunting suggestion sug-gestion of rural simplicity and untroubled untrou-bled happiness. In fact, the piny is Arcadia Ar-cadia In the world of musical comedy. There Is a certain atmosphere, an Intangible Intan-gible delicacy about the comedy which cannot be expressed in vord. Its main appeal Is in Its refinement and uniqueness In its field. Charles Frohman. the producer, pro-ducer, has given the comedy a sumptuous sumptu-ous production and has staged tho drills, ensembles consistent with the beauty and sweetness of Its story. "The Xlgccr," the play in which Florence Flor-ence Roberts will be seen at the Colonial Thursday. Friday. Saturday and Saturday Satur-day matinee of this week. Is an Interesting Interest-ing play for everybody, and while it Is full of thrills and at times borders on the melodramatic, tho parts arc in such competent hands that the piece becomes most Interesting. There Is a lynching which is unseen, and yet tremendously in dramatic evidence; the race riots and other incidental scenes of the play are Cowerful In their suggestion and realism; ut It Is tile psychological side of the play that explains Its wonderful effect on an audience. The company includes Miss Roberts, Thurlow Bergen, Louise Rial and others. Solo of seats begins todav. |
