Show COMPANY'S VERSION OF TROUBLE AT MINEi The following statement was given out nt the officos of President C. M. Strevoll of the Independent Coal and Coke company at noon Monday. "The troublo as we understand it has been caused by two or three foreigners, who have evidently intended to make trouble, complaining of an alleged shortage of weight. When the general superintendent, Mr. Bell, agreed to allow al-low them to put in one of their own men to check the weights, they would not accept this, which wo think indicates indi-cates this was only an excuse to make trouble; and that the- really intendod to strike for higher wages, notwithstanding notwith-standing the fact that we arc now paying pay-ing the highest wages for mining coal of any company in the stale. "After refusing to accept tho proposition propo-sition of a man to check tho weights, these men quit work and were paid off. It then seemed as if the matter would be adjusted without serious difficulty, and there was no trouble of any kind yesterday. This morning, about ( o'clock, many of the foreign miners stationed themselves along tho incline where the men going to work must pass, with the iutontiou of not allowing them to pass and go to work. "Tho deputy sheriff, Thomas Crick, and one of his assistants wcro investigating investigat-ing matters. His assistant. Thomas Jackson, was shot and killed. As Sheriff Kclter of Carbon county and his deputies were trailing tho third suspect sus-pect of the Sunnysido holdup and murder mur-der they were unable to cope with the difficulty at once. "7n view of this fact, and following urgent requests from Kenilworth for assistance, as-sistance, a special train was got ready to leave Salt Lake City for Kcuilworth at 1 o'clock today carrying forty deputies. depu-ties. Jt is hoped that matters will be adjusted and their services will not be needed long, hut in viow of the attitude atti-tude assumed by the foreigners it has been thought best to take every possible possi-ble precaution for safety of tho employees em-ployees of the company." |
