Show WALSH MEN ADMIT HE , CUT BE ELECTED 1 Champion of Helena Attorney Says II Is Necessary 1o Pick Some One Else. V HELENA. Mont.. Feb. 6. Following the deflection of several Walsh men In the balloting, the supporters of the Helena attorney tonight admitted his defeat and are casting about for a suitable candidate candi-date to succeed United States Senator Thomas 1L Carter. Thus far the Walsh men have been unable to rench an agreement agree-ment being about equally divided between Representative R. Lee Word of Helena, a former judge or the supreme court; State Senator W. G. George of Billings. John Mncglnnls of Butte, and C. B. Nolan of Helena, Mr. Walsh's law partner. Tho net result of the voting today was that Conrad received the highest vote of the session, while Walsh received the lowest. After the session Representative Donohue of Dawson, who has voted for Mr. Walsh on every ballot, said: "The election of Walsh is an Impossibility Impos-sibility at this session and sorno compromise com-promise candidate must be found. Who It will be I cannot say. Personally 1 am under a pledge to vote for Walsh until he releases me. When that will be I do not know, but I know that Mr. Walsh does (-not (-not want to force a deadlock." The absence today of a Democratic member is said to bo responsible for the Introduction of a rule In the joint assembly as-sembly authorizing a call of the assembly and the enforced attendance of the absent ab-sent members. The resolution was Rlt-terlv Rlt-terlv fought by tho Republicans and occasioned oc-casioned much partisan feeling. After much jockeying, the rule was adopted, fortv-four to forty-six. but one member of each partv voting with the opposite partv.
