C The snowstorm that struck this city yesterday, filling the streets with huge drifts, delaying railroad rail-road transportation and temporarily tying up street, car and elevated train service passed on to the cast late today. The storm center moved enstward to Indiana and tho United States weather bureau predicted clear weather for the middle west tomorrow. The loos here to traction, telegraph and telephone companies and the city Is estimated esti-mated at ?1.000,000. Surface transportation transpor-tation companies came to a practical standstill In the loop In the rush hours tonight. Special efforts had been made to pro-vldo pro-vldo for the homebound workers, but when several hundred thousand employees em-ployees In tho office buildings down town swarmed Into the cars It was practically Impossible to clear tho tracks and most workers were delayed several hours. Nearly eight und a half inches of snow fell, but as Mm storm was accompanied by a high wind many of the streets oulHide of the loop arc blocked bv drifts several feet high and reaching from curb to curb. The situation became worse tonight when tho temperature dropped below freezing and sleet covered the drifts. Two fatalities nnd numerous accidents were reported to the police. A score of persons per-sons had narrow escapes when, in the height of tho storm, a Poro Marquette switch engine collided with a lorty-.ev-enth street car at Southwestern avenue.
