In ono of the most disastrous explosions ever recorded In upper -Michigan ten men met instant denth at the plant of the Pluto Powder company in the outskirts of Ish-pomlng Ish-pomlng late this afternoon. Tho bodies of the dead were blown to pieces. The dend are: Michael O'Connor, aod 50: Robert Askew, 2f: Edward Woodward, 19; Gcorpre Woodward, 17; Thomas Ripper, Rip-per, 19: Joseph Ripper. 20; Charles Kemp. 10: Justin Jordan. 10; George Wolberg, 20; Andrew Matson, 3n. All the men wero single except O'Connor O'Con-nor and Askew. Ono Injured employee Is Fred Hnrris, a. teamster, who was thrown to the ground by tho force of the shock and was slightly hurt. Tho explosion took place in the Kela tine powder houoo. Every man In this bulldhiK was killed. What caused the explosion will never he known. Gelatine powder is largely composed of nitroglycerine and it is supposed sup-posed that the mixture was being stirred In iho big crucible when the stuff let go. About one thousand pounds exploded. Only twenty minutes before t he disaster 5000 pounds of the explosive had been removed, re-moved, otherwise the havoc would hovo been much greater. As it was, tho plant was llttlo damaged and the shock felt In Ishpeming was hardly perceptible. Windows nt Wlnthrop a mile away, however, how-ever, were broken.
