Show DHS wins Academic Olympiad Davis High School became the first three-time three-time winner at the eighth Academic Olympiad Olym-piad at Utah State University Tuesday. Davis' mental magicians won high total points at Olympiads in 1989 and 1990 as well. Winning Star Wars, the high profile team competition held in the afternoon, was Logan High School. This is the first win for the Cache Valley school. Roy High School placed second and Mountain Crest, the 1991 Star Wars champion, placed third. Layton High School senior Nathan Simpson Simp-son 'crutched' his way to the winners circle four times Tuesday during awards ceremonies for the 1992 Academic Olympiad Olym-piad at Utah State University. Favoring an injured foot, Simpson negotiated the steps to the podium to receive gold medals in mathematics and science competitions. He was named overall high point winner for the Olympiad and on his fourth trip to the podium accepted an all-expense all-expense paid trip to the Netherlands. Simpson won a four-year scholarship to USU at the 1991 Olympics. Davis High's winning high point total was accomplished by exceptional individual performances per-formances by team members Chad Berbert, David Hansen, Loren Hulse, Jonathan King, Eric McPherson, David Nicoll, Catherine Packer, Michael Sherman and Kirk Sorensen. Davis coach Genene C. Hill received a free trip to the Netherlands for her students' win. Area businesses contributed the money to send Olympiad winners to Heerlen, The Netherlands this summer to visit the academic aca-demic team that participated in the USU Olympiad. The visitors will stay in team and coach homes, reciprocating the hospitality shown to them this week in northern Utah. Michael Busse, silver medalist in science from Bountiful High School, also received a Netherlands trip and scholarship. He won a four-year scholarship in 1991. Other medalists include: mathematics, Matthew Perry, bronze, Bountiful High School, one year scholarship; Michael Sherman, fourth place, Davis High School, one year scholarship. Genene Hill's students amassed the most points. Science: Michael Busse, silver, Michael Putnam, bronze, Viewmont High School and four-year scholarship, and Wendy Jensen, fourth place, Bountiful High School, one-year one-year scholarship.
