It is my understanding understan-ding that we live in a free country , "nd can choose whether we do or in't have prayer in public meetings. Every time ve pick up a I JB?r' ere 's something else the SCLU is dictating we should or should not do. Maybe if the news media would just ignore it, it would go away. Surely Michele Parish is bright enough to know that praying in public pub-lic meetings will have no harmful effect on anyone. Why doesn't the ACLU put its efforts to work to benefit society and ban the making of R-rated movies. It's a cinch the sex, nudity, vulgar language and violence do more harm to our youth than a simple prayer. If Michele Parish is not happy with the freedoms we have here, I would suggest that she move to Russia and we could all say "good riddance." D.F. Hansen Bountiful ACLU should seek worthy cause Editor: I applaud your stand on prayer. I firmly believe that prayer is proper in opening government meetings. In these perilous times, we surely need wisdom from a higher source. And I thank God that many communities, com-munities, including Bountiful, have had the moral courage to continue with prayer despite the attacks. The ACLU reasoning that allowing allow-ing prayer is but a first step in government control of religion flies in the face of the history of the United States, and the State of Utah. For prayer is not a novel concept, but clearly goes back to the foundations founda-tions of our nation and state. (And, of course, much much further.) Yet, in all those years, we have not been overrun by any state-mandated religion. As your editorial pointed out, there are many areas needing help. If the ACLU were to be of service to mankind, they should immerse themselves in a ' worthy cause. Let's keep prayer! Steve R Love Bountiful Student asks for info Editor: I am a fourth grader at Forest Lake Elementary School. My class is studying about people in your state. Please send us some material about your area. Sincerely, Clinton Parker 6801 Brookfield Rd. Columbia, SC 29206 |
