BOUNTIFUL Republican U.S. Senate candidates Bob Bennett, Ben-nett, Joe Cannon, Ted Stewart and Brent Ward will make their case to voters on Monday, March 30 at a debate cosponsored by the Davis County Clipper, Del B. Rowe Law Office and the Davis County Republican Party. The debate will be held at Bountiful Boun-tiful High School at 7 p.m. All four candidates will be allowed a brief opening statement. Ward Brent Ward seeks election to the U.S. Senate with a strong background back-ground in business and public service. ser-vice. . Until recently Ward was Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of Salt Lake City based Huntsman Chemical Corporation. With combined com-bined annual revenues of $1.5 billion, bil-lion, Huntsman is America's largest privately held chemical company. As Ronald Reagan's activist U.S. Attorney for Utah from 1981-1989, 1981-1989, Ward attacked rampant criminal crim-inal investment fraud, broke up major drug trafficking rings and forfeited their assets to the public treasury, took an award-winning Mr. Cannon was named Entrepreneur of the Year 1987 by Utah Business Digest, and . They reside with their six children in Provo, Utah. Ted Stewart Ted Stewart, former chairman of the Utah Public Service Commission, was born in Logan, Utah on August 19, 1948. One of 10 children, his father retired from the Air Force and moved his family to a dairy farm in Weston, Idaho when Ted was ten. Ted attended public schools and graduated from West Side High School in 1966. Ted attended Utah State University where he graduated in 1972 with a B.S. degree in Political Science. While at Utah State, he served as student body vice-president. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Utah in 1975. He undertook the full-time practice of law with the Salt Lake City firm for Senior & Senior. His legal practice was concentrated in Bob Bennett is well-known for his accomplishments in the area of education. He was appointed Chairman to the Education Strategic Planning Commission for the Utah State Board of Education and received the Light of Learning Award in 1989 for outstanding contribution to public education in Utah. Joseph A. Cannon Joseph A. Cannon is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Geneva Steel and was the Chief Executive Officer of Geneva Steel until July, 1991. He played the lead role in the purchase of Geneva Steel from USX Corporation and the reopening of the plant in September, 1987. Prior to assuming the leadership of Geneva Steel, Mr. Cannon was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, specializing in environmental law. From 1981 to 1985 he was a high ranking official in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington D.C. Under his leadership, the Environmental Protection Agency issued regulations to remove lead from gasoline and initiated research into the global warming and rising sea level issues. A native Utahn, Mr. Cannon received his B.A. degree in political politi-cal science from Brigham Young University and his J.D. with honors from BYU Law School in 1977. Robert F. Bennett Robert F. Bennett, candidate for the U.S. Senate, was born in September 1933 and was raised in Salt Lake City. Bennett is a graduate gradu-ate of the University of Utah in political science. Bob is married to Joyce McKay. When asked about how he will handle the grueling schedule of the senate and how a career in politics usually affects families, Bennett said, "Now as a result of many years and some success in the business busi-ness world, I am able to turn my attention back to politics without having to worry about my family being provided for if I should cast an unpopular vote or take a controversial contro-versial stand." , Bob Bennett has six children, the youngest are graduating from high school this year. The entrepreneurial spirit runs strona in Bob Bennett. Until earlier this year he was chief executive officer of The Franklin International Institute. In 1989, INC. Magazine named Bob its "Entrepreneur of the Year" for the Rocky Mountain Region because of his success at Franklin. Currently, Bennett is in demand as a speaker, seminar leader and consultant. He is also well-known for his book Gaining Control. Bennett has been an officer at the Republican National Convention and spent 12 years in Washington in a variety of positions posi-tions including assignments on both House and Senate staffs. |
