Show Region seeds named County teams prepare for reaion tourneys By G.BRETT HART Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL If you happen to live in Bountiful (or the surrounding surroun-ding area) and you happen to be a high school wrestling fan, you're in grappling heaven this week as both Bountiful and Viewmont host the area's top wrestlers in region tournament tour-nament action. On Wednesday, Bountiful High School will host the Region 6 wrestling tournament. Seedings were announced Saturday. Here's a look at the region's top seeds in other words, who Bountiful and Woods Cross wrestlers will have to beat in order to head to state tournament tour-nament action next month. The first place seeds in the tournament tour-nament will wrestle the eighth place seeds; seconds will square off against seventh seeds and so on. (Remember, grapplers must place in the top four slots at region to earn a state tourney berth.) At 103, Scott Tonioli of Tooele High was seeded first meaning Tonioli finished the region dual meet schedule with the region's best record. Jordan's Carter Phillips was seeded second followed by McKay Price of Murray. Woods Cross' Jason Cleverly was seeded 5th followed by Bountiful Boun-tiful 's Cannon Neslan, who was seeded 6th. In the 112-pound class, Nick I Leonoli from Tooele is the region's top seed meaning Woods Cross Jason Widdision was seeded second followed by Eric Davis of Jordan. Bountiful ' s Ryan Mangrum was seeded 8th. At 1 19, Jeff Johnson of Murray is the man to beat followed by Robert "We're starting to peak now. It feels good to still be improving even after the last match of the season. " Davis Wrestling Coach Alan Porter Aviles of Tooele and Collin Chummers in the second and third seed positions. Wildcat Carrey Beers was seeded fifth, while Bountiful' s Ryan Brown will enter tourney action seeded 8th. In the 125-pound bracket, Chad Manrow of Granite was awarded first seed honors followed by Paul Anaya of Tooele and Brian Smith of Bountiful. Wildcat Travis Adams was seeded eighth. Brad Davis of Murray will lead the 130-pound division in the first seed position. Granite's Brad Davis and Bountiful's Scott Olson round out second and third. Brandon Bell of WX was seeded fifth. In the 1 35-pound division wrestlers will match up against Matt Tonioli of Tooele in the first seed position followed by Joe Hamilton of Judge and Matt Watanuki of West Wildcat Chad Wray was seeded fifth, and Bountiful's Boun-tiful's Tom Shiner enters the tournament tour-nament as the eighth seed. Murray's Troy Park heads up the 140-pound bracket while Jason Henrie of Woods Cross enters second, se-cond, and Josh Stanfield of enters as the third seed. Bountiful's Mitch Brooks was seeded sixth. At 145, Chris West of Granite leads the pack with first seed honors followed by Mike Holmes of Tooele and Jed Feller of Woods Cross in the second and third positions, posi-tions, respectively. Bountiful's Ryan Snow should be a strong competitor entering the tourney seeded fourth. Bountiful ' s only number one seed is 152-pound Marshall Jones. Jones will be joined by second seed, Arzhang Pezujhki of Granite and Chris Brandon of West. Woods Cross' Greg Ghering rounds out the bracket as the fifth seed. In 160-pound competition, Greg Holtry of West High was awarded SEE REGION ON A10 Viewmont in region dual meet action. ac-tion. On the brighter side for the Vikes, seniors Randy Yellow, Neil Randall and Jeff Zesiger are returning return-ing from injuries to compete in the region tourney. All are talented wrestlers whose experience will anchor an-chor the Viewmont team. Thompson said if the Vikings get solid performances from its ranks, especially seniors, Viewmont has a decent shot at the title. For Davis, on the other hand, the season has been a lesson in patience. And patience is beginning to pay off for the young Davis team. If all goes well, Porter hopes to take at least nine Dart wrestlers to the state tournament Feb. 7 at Weber State University. Though the Darts are banking on a first place finish out of 130-pound Jason Robinson, currently ranked number one in the state. Porter said Davis must have solid performances perfor-mances from its other grapplers to do as well as they potentially can. The Region 1 tournament is slated to begin at 1 1 a.m. Thursday and continue throughout the day with subsequent rounds beginning at 1:30, 3:30, 4:30, 6:30 and finals at 7 p.m. Region CONTINUED FROM A9 first seed followed by Travis Pelch of Jordan and Buck Taylor. West's Nate Kamerath heads up 171-pound competition followed by Larry Hansen of Jordan and Todd Thompson of Murray. The Braves will be represented by Rod Steuart in the sixth seed position; the 'Cats will send Steve Kime in the seventh seed spot. At 189, Murray grappler Damon Ware will be followed by Brandon i Vernon of Jordan and Brian Erickson of Woods Cross. The i Braves will not send a 189-pound entrant. At heavyweight, Jeff Hultry of ! West leads Anthony Barbiero of I Tooele and Tafi Matagi of Murray in the top three seeds. In the meantime, Viewmont coach Bart Thompson and Davis coach Alan Porter are gearing their teams up for Thursday's tournament at Viewmont. The Vikings will, of course, be after their sixth consecutive region title.
