Show Viking wrestlers win region J.V. tourney By G -BRETT HART Sports Editor KAYSVDLLE Viewmont High School's junior varsity wrestling squad claimed top honors in the annual an-nual Region 1 J.V. Tournament held at Davis High Saturday, claiming an impressive 18 places overall. Prep Wrestling In team competition, Viewmont claimed first followed by Layton and finally Clearfield. Besides winning the tournament team honors, the Vikings' junior team took home five gold medals. In fact, three of the title bouts featured Viewmont grapplers battling for first and second against each other. "We had a good tournament," said Viewmont coach Bart Thompson. "We're hoping that some of the excitement from Saturday's tournament will rub off on our varsity wrestlers as they prepare for the region varsity tournament Thursday." Viking Mark Winkleman beat teammate Steve Davis for the 125-pound bracket championship. Winkleman led Davis 17-2 before the match was rul ed a technical fall. Davis, of course, was awarded second se-cond place honors. In the 130-pound division, Mike Davis edged teammate Brandon Fenwick 4-3 for a gold medal in an evenly matched title bout that went right to the wire. Fenwick placed second. Brock Seeley earned the Vikes another first place medal in the 135-pound division, beating fellow Viewmont grappler Jeff Sales. Sales took second. Viewmont's other two gold medals came courtesy of Kevin Christensen, 145 and Ryan Clark, 160. In the 103-pound division, Jason Murphy defeated teammate Dan Allied, earning the Vikings third and fourth place respectively. Jason Ruflin took fourth at 112, while teammate Matt Een also won fourth place honors in the 119-pound 119-pound division. At 135, Viewmont claimed its third medal in the bracket as Regan Johnson lost his consolation match and was awarded fourth. Viewmont wrestlers also battled each other in the 140-pound class. Taylor Clark defeated teammate Jeff Morris, winning third and forcing Morris to settle for SEE J.V. ON A9 J.V. CONTINUED FROM A8 fourth. At 145, Jayson Uffins took fourth, while teammate Jesse Heer claimed third at 152. Finally, Ron Page earned Viewmont its 1 8th medal of the day taking third in the 1 89-pound division. Viewmont did not place in either the 171 or heavyweight division. Host Davis High, on the other hand, came away with only three medals in Saturday's tourney due mostly to the fact that the majority of the Darts' junior varsity wrestlers have filled the varsity ranks during the course of the season. David Perkins, 152, claimed his division's gold medal in a gripping 3-1, overtime grudge match with C. Moore of Clearfield. En route to Saturday's first place performance, Perkins had to defeat two region foes that had thoroughly defeated him earlier in the season. Perkins had lost to Moore twice during regular season matches mat-ches and had also lost to Gibby of Layton High. Junior wrestler Chad Billings won the Darts only second place medal, losing to Weber wrestler Ryan Royball 6-0 in the 112-pound title bout Brady Smith, 130, claimed Davis' third and final medal, losing to Clearfield's A. Jeppson 7-4 in a consolation con-solation bracket match and ending the tournament in fourth place. Brady defeated Jeppson earlier in the tournament "We expected to do better," said Davis coach Alan Porter. A lot of our wrestlers had some varsity experience experi-ence and should have wrestled tougher." |
