Show LDS Church gives statement on book banning incident BOUNTIFUL As mentioned in Saturday's edition, callers to the Davis County Clipper said that excerpts from the novel Grendel, the disputed book at Viewmont High School, have been circulated at several Bountiful-area church meetings. When contacted by the Clipper, Don Lefevre, a press spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued the following statement: "Members of our church are encouraged to be good citizens and become involved in community affairs in an effort to be of service and help make their communities better, more wholesome places in which to live and raise families. But church facilities should not be used to promote certain causes without the express approval of the First Presidency. "Don't let this be misunderstood. I am not implying that the Church opposes op-poses worthy causes or disapproves of or questions the motives or objectives objec-tives of these organizations. On the other hand, the Church cannot be placed plac-ed in the position of endorsing their programs or objectives except through the official action approved by the First Presidency. It goes without saying that anyone who acts contrary to these guidelines acts solely upon their own responsibility and without the authorization of the Church." |
