Wesfl Volley -gamers fifle , wiflh two run circuit clout 1 Home runs by Greg Smith, Granite and Steve Carter, West Valley, decided the winners in the Pony Sectional Tournament championship games Friday and Saturday. Smith connected for a homer in the top of the 11th inning which gave Granite a heart pounding 3 to 2 victory in the first championship game that was concluded at 11:30 p.m. Friday. A two run blast with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the West Valley all-stars a 10 to 8 win in the second championship game Saturday and first place in the tournament. A 1-0 lead was gained by Granite in the first inning in the first championship cham-pionship game. Smith was walked with two outs and advanced to third base on wild pitches. Mike Layden smashed a double to drive in Smith. Granite increased its lead to 2-0 with one run in the top of the fourth inning. Layden was hit by the pitcher Wayne Arroyo and scored on a sacrifice hit by Jeff Lantinga. Seven of the first 11 West Valley batters were retired due to strike outs and finally West Valley got something going in the hitting department in the fourth inning. Jeff Lund reached first base on an error by the pitcher. Arroyo gained a double and Lund scored to cut Granite's lead to 2 to 1. Kolb ripped a single up the middle to score Arroyo and knot up the game at 2-2. The game remained knotted at 2-2 for six innings until Smith gained a lead off homer in the top of the 11th inning. West Valley had countless chances to win the game but they couldn't seem to do anything right. Granite loaded up the bases in the top of the fifth inning. Steve Davis singled. Brad Guber was walked and another batter got on base on a fielder's choice to load up the bases. The next batter watched strike three whiz by. West Valley had two runners on the base paths in the bottom of the fifth inningPreston Mitchell was walked, but was tagged out trying to steal second base. Charles Fuller was walked and was tagged out trying to steal third. Arroyo advanced to third base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Darin Atkinson struck out for the final out. Granite was retired one, two, three in the top of the seventh inning on strike outs and Kevin Anderson was walked in the bottom of the seventh inning but . West Valley failed to drive him in and the game was forced into extra innings. The Granite crew was retired one, two three in the eighth and ninth wirings wi-rings and West Valley loaded the bases in both innings, but couldn't get a runner across home plate. Jerry Taylor slugged the baseball between the shortstop's legs and Arroyo was walked on purpose. The bases were filled up when Atkinson was hit by the pitcher, but Kolb flied out with two outs. West Valley was given another chance to win the game in the ninth inning. Mike Steele was walked and advanced to third base. Steve Carter and Fuller were walked to load up the bases with only one out. Taylor failed to swing at strike three and Steele was tagged out when he tried to steal home plate. Granite had Randy Casper on base in the top of the tenth inning, but he died at second base due to bat failures. The West Valley crew received its third ' chance to win .the ball game in the bottom of the tenth inning. Lund ripped the baseball to the fence for a double .and Arroyo was given an intentional w alk. Lund was tagged out at third base during a stealing attempt and Atkinson was walked. Kolb struck out with two outs and Anderson was walked to load up the bases. If Lund had stayed at second base instead of trying to steal third he would have scored on the walk to Anderson. The baseball darted by Steele untouched for strike three and West Valley wasted anclher scoring opportunity. The baseball officials spent 20 minutes trying to decide whether to play the rest of the game on Saturday as it was after 11 p.m. and no innings are supposed to be started after that time. Finally it was decided to finish the game and Smith sent the first pitch by Anderson over the left field fence. The next three batters w ere retired, but Granite had a 3 to 2 lead. West Valley didn't receive a fourth chance to win the game as Carter grounded out. Fuller struck out and Taylor grounded out and thus the championship was forced into a second game due to a 3-2 win by Granite. It appeared that West Valley was going to massacre Granite in the second championship game Saturday as the first two batters for West Valley, Lund and Fuller, led off with homers over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead. The third batter up, Arroyo, smashed a double and Warren Mitchell singled. However, Arroyo was tagged out at third base and the next two batters struck out.
