Inches deny Rooseveltf crew a viciory in vi'irle conves-S- Inches decided the champion in the Mustang State Tournament in Vernal, Friday as Roosevelt's Troy Thompson failed to touch first base and two runs scored to give Mapleton a 4 to 3 victory in the title game. Roosevelt had a 3 to 2 lead in the first championship game and with runners on second and third and two outs Chad Kimber tapped the ball to the pitcher. Hurler,. Drew Patterson Pat-terson nabbed the ball and threw it to Thompson at first base for what should have been the game ending play and a victory for Roosevelt. The throw was a little high and Thompson leaped for the ball, caught it and landed with his foot not on the bag. Kimber was safe at first and Graves crossed home plate with the game tying run. Thompson held on to the ball due to all the confusion and Brandon Ceilings scored all the way from second base to enable the Mapleton crew to win the game by a score of 4 to 3. Thompson's foot was only on-ly a few inches away from the first base bag and thus inches gave the crown to Mapleton. Roosevelt's Patterson connected for a double with two outs in the top of the first inning. A double by Wes Kroon drove in Patterson and gave Roosevelt a 1-0 lead. Thompson singled and Kroon tried to score from third base and was tagged out at the plate. The Mapleton baseballers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Benjamin Brooks got on base on an error er-ror and stole second and third base. Gregory Flinders gained a base hit and Brooks and Flinders scored due to a single by Kimber. Chet Jenkins of Roosevelt led off with a single in the top of the second inning, but the next two batters struck out. Jenkins advanced to third base and scored to tie up the game at 2-2 when Lenny Carlson knocked the glove off the shortstop's hand for a single. Ryan Howell led off with a double and Derek Roylance singled, but pitcher, Brad Gingell struck out Bret Perrero, Justin Ely and forced Brooks to pop up. Roosevelt was blanked in the top of third inning, and Mapleton loaded up the bases in the bottom of the third. Flinders was walked and Kimber and Mark Christensen singled. Flinders was forced out at third base and Howell was walked to load up the bases. However, Gingell got out of the jam when Perrero grounded out. Roosevelt gained a lead of 3 to 2 when they scored one run in the top of the fourth inning. Frank Harper nabbed a single and moved to second base. Carlson singled and Harper moved to third base. Harper scored on a sacrifice fly by Gary Trowbridge. Mapleton had three runners on base in the bottom of the fourth inning, but none of them reached home plate. Roylance was walked, but was tagged out. Ely got on base on a fielder's choice and Brooks reached first base when the ' ball darted between Patterson's legs. Kirby grounded out and Flinders connected con-nected for a vicious shot, which was nabbed for an out, by Trowbridge due to a high leaping catch. Roosevelt's Patterson led off with a single in the top of the fifth inning and advanced to third base, but the next three batters committed outs. Howell was walked and Perrero was hit by pitcher, pit-cher, Mike Martinez with two outs. Martinez got out of the inning when Roylance watched a strike sail by. The Roosevelt crew was retired one, two, three in the top of the sixth inning and now it was Mapleton's turn to bat in the sixth. Ted Pennington reached base - when he tapped the ball to pitcher, Patterson, Pat-terson, who couldn't find the ball in time to throw out the runner. Graves singled. Pennington was forced out at third base. David Kirby flied out and Roosevelt was one out away from a victory. vic-tory. Collings gained a fielder's choice and Kimber hit the ball to the pitcher, Patterson and first baseman, Thompson, Thomp-son, failed to touch first base and the tying run, Graves and the winning run, Collings, crossed home plate to give Mapleton, a 4-3 win. Roosevelt thumped Mt. Olympus, 11 to 6, in order to advance ad-vance into the championship game. Tooele defeated Lehi, 10 to 4, for first place in the Bronco Section Tournament Tourna-ment in Vernal, Friday. Tooele jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Travis Lohnes, Jason White and Craig Dart singled and scored. Tooele gained a 4-0 lead when Brent Jacobsen was walked and scored. Lehi cut Tooele's lead to 4 to 3 with two runs in the second and one in the third inning. Blake Hickman singled and Jared Peck was walked in the second inning. Both runners run-ners scored runs. Jason Ashley was hit . by the pitcher and scored in the third inning. Romero and Johnson singled and scored runs for Tooele in the third inning inn-ing and Matt Carlton scored a run for Lehi in the fourth inning, which cut Tooele's lead to 6 to 4. Tooele outscored Lehi in the rest of the game, 6 to 0 and won by the score of 10-4. Lehi advanced into the game with a 7-4 win over Mueller Park. |
