Tourney A baseball team has to score runs to win a ball game and the Vernal Mustang League all-star team found out that the saying was true as they scored only one run and were defeated by the Roosevelt all-stars 4 to 1 in the Mustang League State Tournament in Vernal Thursday. The loss knocked Vernal out of the tournament. The crew suffered a first round loss to Mapleton July 29, by the score of 3 to 0. Roosevelt had three base runners in the top of the first inning, but they scored only one run for a 1-0 lead. Frank Harper drilled the ball into right field and an error was called on the outfielder. Harper darted to second base on the error and would have been out at the bag, but the infielder dropped the ball. Harper couldn't make up his mind whether or not to try and steal third base and by the time he decided to run to third base the ball was on its way to the bag and he was tagged out on a close play. Gary Trowbridge reached first base on a low throw by the shortstop. Trowbridge stole second base and advanced to third base. Trowbridge scored Roosevelt's first run when Brad Gingell's hit dropped between the outfielders for a single. Gingell motored to second base, but the next two batters, Wes Kroon and Drew Patterson, were struck out by Vernal pitcher, Dustin Henline. Chuck Schiller grounded out in the bottom of the first inning, but Chance Bailey singled and moved to third base on a single by Henline. Bailey tried to score on a passed ball, but he was tagged out at home plate by Roosevelt's pitcher, Trowbridge, who received the ball from the catcher. Jeff Jackson was hit by the pitcher, but George Murray (lied out to end the inning. Roosevelt gained a base runner in the top of the second inning when Troy Thompson hit the baseball into the gap in left field and acquired a single. However, Danny Pace and Lenny Carlson struck out for outs number two and three. Strike out fever was con- tagious as George Murphy Casey Bevnon and Travis Carroll were Sfed for Vernal in the bottom of the second inning. Bailey got even in the top of the fourth inning as he nabbed a hard shot by Thompson for out number one. Pace and Carlson also grounded out as Roosevelt was blanked in the inning. The Vernal crew knocked its zero off the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Patterson replaced Trowbridge on the mound and Henline greeted the new pitcher with a shot over the outfielder's head for a double. Henline moved to third base and scored on a passed ball, which cut Roosevelt's led to 3-1. Jackson connected con-nected with the baseball, but it was nabbed by Carlson in right field for out number one. The whiffing disease struck Vernal once again as Murray and Murphy struck out.
