Show Uintah cancer unit sponsors tournament You may not hear many "four" calls when Basin golfers start swinging August 14, but those golfers will be doing their part "for" a very worthwhile wor-thwhile cause as they participate in the first American Cancer Society, Walter Hagen Golf Tournament held in this part of Utah. Until Walter Hagen came along, the golf profession was lightly regarded and little respected and golf in America was of limited appeal. "The Haig" changed that. The warmth of his personality and his princely pace of living, combined with his legendary deeds on the golf course, reflected glory on the entire golf profession and on golf itself. And through it all, until he succumbed to the ravages of cancer in 1969, Hagen never failed in his loyalty to golf as a professional and to the PGA of America. Hagen was a direct action type. The ACS Hagen Golf Tournament is the kind of action that would have pleased him. Having fun while supporting the work of the American Cancer Society, and helping the victim whom fate has fingered as tomorrow's cancer victim, is in keeping with the Walter Hagen tradition. The American Cancer Society Hagen Golf Tournaments began in 1970 to perpetuate his memory while raising funds to support the Society's lif esaving programs of research, education, patient service ana renaDiiuauon. Veteran Vernal golfer, Les Maier, is chairing this first-ever event, scheduled for the Vernal Municipal Golf Course. The $10 entry fee will purchase 18 holes of golf, a Walter Hagen golf cap and numerous tees, cleat cleaners and ball markers. The winning golfer in the Vernal ACS Hagen Tournament will play in the state contest in September at Willow Creek Country Club. A state winner flies to Florida in February for the National Tournament. A list of sponsors is currently being finalized and will appear in next week's Vernal Express. Interested golfers should contact Mr. Maier at the pro shop number, 789-9972. |
