Show Senate Approves Bill To Divide Ute Tribes The Senate passed and sent to the House, Tuesday, a bill authorizing au-thorizing a division of property of the wealthy Ute Indian tribe of the Uintah-Ouray reservation between full-blood and mixed-blood mixed-blood Indians. The measure was sponsored by Sen. Arthur .. V. Watkins (R., Utah) who explained: "During the past three years the 439 mixed-blood members of the tribe have obtained the lion's share of assistance and are now approaching full integration inte-gration with the non-Indian communities surrounding their reservation and are in fact being be-ing retarded by their being linked to the 1,326 full-blood members." Under the Senate-approved bill, the mixed-blood Utes will be completely divorced from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in at least seven years. |
