NE OLA By Lecia Horrocks VWVVSNNSWJ: Independence Day Observed By Neola Area Independence Day was celebrated cele-brated July 5th with a program which was held in the ward chapel with Richard Larsen as master of ceremonies. Guest speaker was George Stewart, of Roosevelt, who was followed by other appropriate numbers. Miss Phyllis Eksund and her two attendants, Bonnie Eksund and Kathy Gardner, reigned over the affair, and later in the day rode on the float of the Sunday School, accompanied by Gerald Henrie, as Uncle Sam. Local church organizations and clubs furnished floats for the parade, with first prize being be-ing awarded to' the Primary; second to the Community Club, third to the Sunday School. A large crowd attended the afternoon rodeo, where "Doc''-Jenkins "Doc''-Jenkins announced the events over the loud speaker. Dorothy Luck and Dawn Huber filled in with western songs, accompanied accom-panied by Roy Taylor, of La-point La-point on his guitar. A dance at the Vella in the evening concluded the days festivities. fes-tivities. SURPRISE VISITS AND TELEPHONE CALL Life was full of pleasant surprises sur-prises for Mr. and Mrs. Deone Spencer last week. A telephone call from their son, Franklin, who is filling a mission for the LDS church, came Thursday, from Montana. Saturday morning morn-ing their two daughters and their husbands, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Morrill and Mr. and Mrs. miftrfn .Tpnkins. nrrivpH frmn a brief visit from California. The foursome returned to Richmond, Calif, where the young men are" stationed with a division of the. Navy. LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND BRINGS HOST OF VISITORS The two-day holiday of the past weekend brought scores of visitors to Neola, where they greeted friends and enjoyed the celebrations of the 3rd and 5th. Among those were: Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Mitchell and three children, of Tooele, who were guests at the Dace Mitchell home; Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Wamsley, of Phoenix, Arizona, who plan on spending 2 weeks at the Oluf Duncan home and with other relatives throughout the Basin; Mr. and Mrs. James Mecham, of Orem. accompanied by their ' granddaughters, Kay and Carma Bacon, of Nampa, Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Ned Shoell and family, of Orem, and Mrs. Ada Hutcheon, of Salt Lake City, visited at the James O. Peterson Peter-son and Jack Leavitt homes; Miss Afton Smithsori, who is employed in Salt Lake City, spent a few days here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nephi Smithson; Mr. and Mrs. Arvid Fredrickson and two sons, of Tremonton, were weekend guests at the homes of Bishop and Mrs. Richard Olsen; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Bellaston and children, of Orem, greeted friends here during the celebration. cele-bration. Clint Mecham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mecham, former Neola residents, greeted friends here last week, after being released re-leased from four years of service ser-vice in the Navy. He plans on entering college this fall. Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Jensen, along with other members of the stake Indian mission, motored mo-tored to the Daniels ward in Heber Valley last Tuesday evening. eve-ning. Approximately twenty-five Indians accompanied them and presented the MIA assembly program to an appreciative audience. |
