Show 1 Reservation News . . . j () About The x UINTAH-OURAY INDIAN RESERVATION IN CONGRESS On January 21, 1954, Congressman Con-gressman Rhodes of Arizona, introduced in-troduced H.B. 7445, which is a bill to define an Indian for the purpose of providing special services and for other purposes. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United Stales of America Amer-ica in Congress assembled, that for the purpose of providing pro-viding special services to individual in-dividual Indians after June 30, 1955, with funds (other than Tribal funds) appropriated appropriat-ed for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, only persons who have one-half or more Indian blood shall be regarded as Indians; In-dians; and the Secretary of the Interior is authorized and directed to take any action that is necessary to terminate the Federal trust relationship to the real and personal property pro-perty of persons with less than one-half degree of Indian blood. Sec. 2. Whenever the Secretary Secre-tary of the Interior determines deter-mines that the application of the provisions of the first section of - this Act in any case will result in undue hardship or that the circumstances circum-stances of any case are such as to make ihe application of such provisions unfeasible, he is authorized to exempt such case from the application applica-tion of such provisions. If the proposed Bill is enacted into law, Federal trust relationships relation-ships to real and personal property pro-perty of approximately 800 Ute Indians of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation will be terminated. R-N The National Congress of American Indians is calling an emergency meeting of American Ameri-can Indians in Washington, D. C, Feb. 25 through Feb. 28, 1954 to consolidate opposition to legislation threatening tribal existence and property. A number num-ber of Bills, have been introduced intro-duced in Congress to terminate Federal trust relationship to real and personal property of Indian In-dian tribes. The Ute tribe has been requested to send delegates. dele-gates. Hovever, no decision has been reached at this time. The matter will be discussed at the next "-eeting of the Tribal Business Bus-iness Committee. R-N RESIGNS POSITION Mrs. Prudy Daniels, irrigation clerk for the past three years, resigned effective at the' close of business, Jan. 29, 1954. The Daniels family has moved from Fort Duchesne to Roosevelt and occupy the Dillman apartment. Mr. Daniels will continue to work for the Roads Division, and Prudy will become a full-time full-time housewife and mother. Mrs. Daniels will be greatly missed at the agency office, where her pleasant personality and efficient services were outstanding. out-standing. R-N SURFACE ROADS The Roads division under the direction of Lon Logan, has completed the surfacing of the entry and parking lot to the agency office. Mr. Logan and his crew converted the parking lot from an unattractive muddy place to' an attractive dry parking park-ing lot. It not only added to the attractiveness of the agency grounds, but made it much easier eas-ier to" keep the office neat and clean. Thanks to Mr. Logan. R-N SOIL CONSERVATION This last week, R. L. Beardall, soil scientist, made a trip to Henderson, Colo', to' pick up a hydraulic .operated soil coring machine which he will use in making soil surveys. With this machine, he will be able to cover cov-er five or six times as much. land as he has heretofore. The machine is installed on a jeep and is hydraulically operated. Cores of soil are picked up in tubes for analysis. . During January, SMC cleared 150 acres of sagebrush on Bluebell Blue-bell Bench by Rotobeater and drilled 100 acres of it to crested wheatgrass. Supplemental earthen dikes were constructed on the Kaibab Reservation waterspreader, totalling to-talling 400 cu. yds. The moisture picture for the coming year, at this time, is such that all seeding work has been stopped until next fall. However, sagebrush eradication will continue throughout the year.
