Show our- i earn i ournamem &ez s Beside Third Spot In Classic ' Union StilS Has Chance To Defend Title; Altamont Can Also Place; Play-Off Probably At North Emery With the Utes from Uintah practically assured of a trip to their first tournament in many snows, there is a chance the Cougars from Union may still be back at the BYU fieldhouse next month defending their title. In fact, two teams from the Basin division have a possible chance to the third place from Region Five, which consists con-sists of all schools in Southeastern Utah. Last year the powers that be in the Utah High School Activities Acti-vities voted to allow the second place team from this division to meet Manti, who had beaten the second place team in the Emery division, for a chance to enter the tournament. Uintah lost a 1-point thriller to' the Templers. Still more pressure was brought to bear after this experienc, and this year they have come up with a new idea. If things go as it presently looks like it might, Union could win the runner-up spot with Altamont given a good chance to be the third best team. All this is predicated on their abil ity to win at least one each of their two remaining games, or for Tabiona and Duchesne to drop both their final pair of games. Here is how the new arrangement arrange-ment will work and how a third team from Region Five will be at Provo on the opening day of the big show. The second and third teams in the. Uintah division, di-vision, and the second and third teams in the Emery-Grand-San Juan division will meet in a two-day tournament on the home floor of the second place team in the latter division, providing pro-viding that school gym can accomodate ac-comodate the crowds that would attend the games if not it would go to a neutral floor. (Continued on back page) Four Teams . . . (Continued from page 1) Presently North Emery. of Huntington and Monticello are the 2 and 3 teams in that division, di-vision, with little chance of the former being ousted from the second spot. The tragic death of one of their star players, and injury of at least two other team members, might cost Monticello Mon-ticello a place in the tournament. tourna-ment. If North Emery wins second place, then the tournament would go to Huntington. However, How-ever, their accomodations are pretty much on a par with smaller schools in this division, so there is a chance the games' would be taken to' Price and played in the Carbon College gym. First round play in the tourney will pit the second place team from Uintah against the third place team in the other division, with the winners meeting the second night for the third place in the tournament tourna-ment at Provo. Thus all Union . must do is win from Tabiona Friday night, which in itself is a pretty big slice; then take Altamont at Union on March 5; go to the 2-day tourney over Emery County way and win two more games, then they could go to the state meet again. What has been said of Union is true of Altamont they have to dump Duchesne Friday night at Altamont, Al-tamont, and beat either Uintah the following week, or defeat Union, or else pray the Tigers at Tabiona lose to either Union or Uintah. Tabby has to win their last two if they hope to tie for third. |
