Paul lurpliy Presented Silver Beaver For Scooting Services Eighteen years of service to the youth of the Uintah Basin was recognized last Saturday night when Paul Murphy, Roosevelt Roos-evelt Scouter, was awarded the Silver Beaver by the National Parks Council at the 31st Annual An-nual Fellowship "meeting of the Council in Provo. The Silver Beaver Award is presented annually by the Boy Scouts of America to a limited number of volunteer Scouters who have rendered outstanding, service to boyhood and Scouting Scout-ing and in the community in which they live.'' Mr. Murphy was one of seven Scouters to be honored Saturday. Again Ihe importance of the woman in Scouting was emphasized empha-sized as Mrs. Murphy received the "Beaverette" medal along with her husband. In each case the wife of the Scouter was hon-j hon-j ored as was Mrs. Murphy and was cited by the committee making mak-ing the awards. Scouter Murphy began his career of service to youth as a student at Brigham Young Uni-j versity when he became interested inter-ested in special courses being taught in Scouting. After his graduation from the "Y" in 1937, he returned home to Upalco, and, with the encouragement encour-agement of his parents, began using the knowledge and skill he had acquired as a Scoutmaster. Scout-master. In the 18 years that have passed, Scouter Murphy has filled about every position an adult can hold in Scouting. When he moved to Roosevelt 13 years ago, Scouter Murphy was serving as Commissioner in the Duchesne Stake, which at that time included Moon Lake Stake. He is currently serving as Roosevelt District commissioner commis-sioner and had been district chairman, and Uintah Basin Sectional commissioner, as well as assistant scoutmaster, scoutmaster scout-master and troop committeeman. Not only does Paul Murphy devote a lot of time to Scouting, but he finds time to serve his church and community, as well as being an employee of th Commercial Bank of Utah, Roosevelt Roos-evelt office. He is a member of the Roosevelt City Council; treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Lions Club. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Mr. Murphy is currently serving as a member of the high council coun-cil of the Roosevelt Stake. He served as stake clerk under President Ray Dillman, and for six years was secretary of the 162nd Quorum of Seventy. Jle had also been Aaronic Priesthood Priest-hood adviser. A native of Woodland, where he was born, Mr. Murphy moved to Upalco with his parents when he was five years old. In addition ad-dition to his degree received from the BYU, he studied three summers at the University of Washington, where he took special spe-cial training in banking. He and his wife, Blanche, are the parents ' of two girls and a boy. In addition to her domestic do-mestic duties. Mrs. Murphy is librarian at Union High School. Three other Silver Beaver Awards have been presented to Uintah Basin Scouters. In 1936, Harold Lundall, Vernal, was the recipient of the honor. Then in 1946, Willard Day, Roosevelt, now a resident of Salt Lake City, was cited; and in 1948 Linford Maxfield, of Altonah, gained the distinction. The seven sev-en who received the award this year is the largest single grouio to be cited since the first award was- presented to George K. Brimhall, Provo, in 1932. Six were honored in 1951. |
