Show commentary DAVE WIGHAM Nothing Wrong With Publicizing Team's Stats By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports Bob Robinson has taken a lot of abuse lately. Sure most of it, it not all of it, has been in fun but the fact remains he's been on the short end of the stick. IT SEEMS AS if Bob and been sending out what amounts to press releases to the media in the area about the Woods Cross basketball team. I got several copies in the mail as did several other newspapers. Bob has a son on the Wildcat state title team, a great player named Todd. While Todd's statistics sta-tistics were listed in these releases, the main thing was an update on the enitre Cat team. HE'S TAKEN a lot of heat over this. One paper went as far as to say of Mr. Robinson, "He has the audacity to send these press releases re-leases on his son to the media." Sure his son was mentioned once or twice but no more than the other players. My point is this. I'm glad someone had enough interest to send out these sheets to keep the media informed. Every week the colleges col-leges send out releases to us media guys but they have Sports Information Directors who get paid to do this. The high schools are on their own for publicity. I SAY RIGHT on Bob Robinson. Let's have more like him. People like him who have enough interest in a team to do something about ab-out it. Some people feel Bob went overboard for his son but I didn't see it that way. He was pushing the entire Wildcat team along with his son. Without the Bob Robinsons of the world all we would know about a high school team is what we read in a box score. With Bob around we can tell people about such things as assists, rebounding and all the little things that make up a basketball team's success. EACH SCHOOL should be lucky enough to have a Bob Robinson in their corner. Someone who, like the college SID's," will keep the media informed on the progress of the high school teams. It sure makes my job easier with him around. ' If I were a high school coach I would want him on my side to make sure the press got the real story, and all of it. Someone who cared about the program to do something about it. ALL BOB Robinson was to this reporter was the Sports Information Director for Woods Cross High. He did his job extremely well and the Cats should thank him for it. He kept the media informed. His son may be a little embarrassed over what some have said about his dad. Believe me though he's a super individual and he has done nothing but good for the program. He's proud of the team's accomplishments on and off the floor, and the team should be grateful for all he has done for them. I MAY BE in the minority but I honestly feel Bob Robinson performed a just service for the Cats. Sure one of the Wildcats would have been offered a college scholarship no matter what happened but believe me a couple more Cats just might get some offer and Bob's work is a reason. This doesn't mean to say that every father should send in releases on the team his son plays on but every team should have one guy like Bob Robinson to push their team to the media. After all the colleges do it all the time, why not the high schools. |
