Show Bountiful Okays Study On Possibility Of Treating Canyon Water By GARY R. BLODGETT News Editor BOUNTIFUL A pilot study to determine if water .uom M:il Creek can be adequately adequ-ately treated for cullinary (drinking) purposes was approved by the Bountiful City Council last Wednesday night. CITY ENGINEER Jack M. Balling told the council that Bountiful has attempted for years to convert the stream water for culinary use but these efforts have been curtailed cur-tailed because of stringent state health requirements. "Now these requirements have been relaxed, making it possible for a pilot study to be conducted," he said. MR. BALLING explained that a pre-test treatment facility facil-ity will be used for two or three weeks before a temporary treatment plant is used for more extensive testing. After about a month to six weeks of testing, an extensive study will be conducted for about ab-out a year before a water treatment treat-ment plant will be built, the city engineer noted. HE SAID the city can conduct con-duct the preliminary testing and the final phase of testing will cost the city about $2,700 a week for two or three weeks. "If the preliminary testing is successful, extensive testing and data gathering will be continued con-tinued for about a year." He said total cost of testing and compiling of necessary data would be about $10,000. Mr. Balling said he had no estimate of plant construction. D7 SUCCESSFUL, the treatment treat-ment plant would be built from capital improvements funds derived from a water assessment assess-ment during development of subdivisions. Mr. Balling said George Fadel (who happened to be i attending the council meeting) was instrumental in Bounti-ful's Bounti-ful's efforts for more than 15 years to convert the stream flow of Mill Creek for culinary use. Mr. Bailing and the council coun-cil praised Mr. Fadel, former mayor, for his efforts. COUNCILMAN J. Dean Hill explained the concept of converting stream flow for culinary use is new only to Utah but has been widely accepted throughout the United Un-ited States for many years. |
