Vikes Spoil Predictions, Enter Tourney By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports VIEWMONT -- At the beginning of the girls basketball season no many so-called experts were mentioning the name of Viewmont when talking about the top clubs in the area. NOW THOSE same people are talking about the state 4A tournament held last week for the top 16 clubs in the state and the name of Viewmont View-mont is definitely one of those mentioned. Not many people expected much out of these Viking women in hoop this season but the girls got behind their motto of No Pain No Gain, putting in a lot of hours of hard work and floor burns and their efforts were rewarded with a fourth place league finish and an invita- tion to the elite tournament. NOT BAD for a club that no one expected much of. No one except the girls and their coaches. Opening night of the tournament sends a fourth place squad up against the region champion cham-pion and the Viking women found out in a hurry why the Skyline team won their league. The Vikes came out strong, they weren't intimidated in-timidated by the Eagles press clippings at all, to hold onto a slim one point edge 10-9 after one quarter. BUT THEN THE taller Eagle crew went to work utilizing their height and outside shooting. shoot-ing. Quickly the Salt Lake school took control of this battle and although the Vikings put up a game effort they were simply outmanned in this battle. Senior Jill Barlow led the Vikes, as she has much of the season, with a game high 15 points coming on a variety of shots including some long range bombs and ending with some great foul shooting. Sophomore Heidi Husbands also played well against the taller Eagles ending en-ding her night's effort with 11 points. Junior Melinda Davis played well in scoring 8 while little Denise Draper contributed a couple of points. Dylann Duncan led the Eagles as she used her height advantage for 23 points. THAT SENT the Vikes up against Layton, who tied with Clearfield for the Region One title, and once again the Vikes came out on the short end. Heading into the battle the Layton coach indicated that in order for his side to have any chance at the victory they would have to shut out the Vikings high scoring Jill Barlow. The Lancers were able to do this limiting Jill to just 6 points, well below her average, but it did open up the middle a little more than usual and sophomore Jenny Miller enjoyed a fine game with a team high 14 points. Another sophomore Heidi Husbands also took advantage advan-tage of the Layton defense on Barlow as she hit for 9 points. VIEWMONT CAME out cold in the first period and quickly fell behind 12-6 but then they got their act together in the second quarter to pull within one at 19-18 at the half time buzzer. The third period was the big difference in this battle as the Vikes went cold while Layton went to work outscoring the Viewmont five 19-10 to put the battle out of reach. Denise Draper added 4 and Stephanie Smith added 1 point in a losing effort. VIEWMONT HAS a reputation of fielding tough basketball teams and this year's group was no different. They were in all their games and did the school proud of their efforts. They do lose some very talented seniors but they also have some great looking prospects returning return-ing next season. |
