Each week throughout this centennial year, a historical site in Park City will be identified by a descriptive plaque. By the end of the year, the numbered num-bered markers will act as signposts for a self-guided tour of Park City. This week's centennial site is The Claimjumper Hotel, 53 Main Street. Here is the text of the plaque: Fire was a recurring disaster in early Park City. The Park Hotel originally occupying this site was twice destroyed, once in the Great Fire of 1898. Its replacement then burned in 1912. The people of Park City recognized the need for a more fire-retardant hotel and funds were raised by the Henry Spriggs Commercial Club to build this three-story brick and masonry structure. struc-ture. It opened as the New Park Hotel in November, 1913. It was built at a cost of $22,455. The New Park Hotel was described as a "beautiful and commodius hostelry" with a dining room decorated in patriotic red, white and blue. All meals, including Sunday dinner, were 50 cents each. Guest lists, which were published weekly in the Park Record, indicated that business was flourishing. Architecturally typical of brick buildings of its era, this hotel is now called The Claimjumper and also houses a restaurant at street level and a private club in the basement. |
