Show Miners bring strong team to Region 11 bovs' tennis tourney i Judging from their performance perfor-mance in matches played so far this spring, the Park City Miners should be the favorite to win the Region 11 boys' tennis tournament set for Friday at the Park Meadows Racquet Club. In a competition against their six Region 11 opponents in 1984 the Miners have lost only one individual match-in match-in Number One doubles to the Rowland Hall team of Scott Bell and Matt Beren-son Beren-son In addition to Park City and Rowland Hall, teams from St. Joseph, Dugway, North Rich, South Summit and Mt. Vernon will be represented Friday. Park City Coach Bob Bums said he expects tough competition compe-tition to come from Bell and Berenson in Number One doubles, and from Ted Brewer of St. Joseph in Number One singles. Brewer and Chris Elkins of Park City played a demanding match earlier in the season which Elkins finally won in three sets. In other matchups, Bums says he thinks Mike Morrow of Mt. Vernon will likely be in the final Number two singles match, and Bo Arbogast of St. Joseph in Number Three singles. In doubles Dugway and St. Joseph will do well, he said. The Miner lineup is not finalized yet. Burns said he wouldn't make the decision on final seedings until Thursday morning. The only sure bet is Elkins in the No. 1 singles slot. Greg King, Bob DiTullio, and Kory Bell will contest the other two singles spots. The four doubles positions will be up for grabs between Randy Dyer, Scott Tatum, Mike Birch, Brian McReynolds, Bell, and Steve Ziegler. Play will start at Park Meadows Friday at 9 a.m. Bums said he can't tell how long it will last that depends de-pends on whether the matches are played indoors or out. Unfortunately, the Miners didn't have that choice last Thursday at Morgan where they finished their regular season with a practice meet. The Miners eked out a 3-2 victory, but due to the adverse conditions (snow falling on the outdoor courts) and the fact that Number One singles standout Elkins didn't play, the score may not have been indicative of the Miners' region chances. Miner Coach Bob Bums said the Morgan coach asked that Elkins not play Number One singles. Seeing the meet was only for practice, Bums agreed, putting King up as m Number One. Afterwards, Bums thought he may have been hoodwinked a bit by the Morgan coach, as Steve Winn came on to beat King 6-3, 6-2. In Number Two singles DiTullio put the Miners back on the track on the cold outdoor courts. He knocked off the other Winn on the team, Dave, 7-5, 6-3. Bell did the same to Morgan's Frank Smith in Number Three singles 7-5, 6-4. Another important Miner absence from the Morgan singles scene was Craig Uriffin , usually the Number Three singles player, who broke his thumb while skiing. He will not be able to play again this season, Bums said. In Number One doubles the Morgan team of Tom Able and Jim French whacked Miners Birch and McReynolds McRey-nolds 6-4, 7-5. In Number Two doubles, though, Dyer and Tatum took Park City back to the forefront with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Joe Tillet and Bob Mills. Bums thought it was good experience to play out in the snow at Morgan. "It showed us how spoiled we are," he said, referring to the Park Meadows Club facility which the Miners call home. |
