Show Who needs all 11? Kicks use only 10 tx)beat Alemannia by Randy Hanskat On a cold, muddy field in Salt Lake Saturday the Silver Kicks showed no mercy, handing the Alemannia team a 4-0 thrashing. And they did all that with only 10 players. Soccer is normally played with 11 players, and it is important im-portant for a team to have reserves due to the amount of running involved. But the Kicks, Park City's adult women's team, had no such luxury, according to Coach Kathy Benner, as the flu culled the team's numbers. However, the lack of bodies was of no consequence "Everything clicked," Benner Ben-ner said. "The team passed well, communicated well, did just about everything well." Roxanne Toly and Madonna Madon-na Harris provided much of the scoring punch for the Kicks Saturday, although both had run in the four-mile Spring Run Off in Park City earlier in the day. Toly scored the game's first two goals on passes from Heidi Hunter. The first came midway through the first half, with the second coming early in the final half. Later in the second half Harris made it 3-0 on a penalty kick. Two Alemannia Aleman-nia defenders near their goal had sandwiched Harris between be-tween them, and she ended up in the mud. The foul was as good as a goal for Harris, who drove the shot home. The final goal came late in the second half from the youngest player on the team, Wendy Smith, an eighth grader who recently started playing with the Kicks. Benner Ben-ner said Smith actually had several shots on goal during the course of the game, one ringing loudly off the goalpost, before the final tally went in. "She is really a welcome addition to the team," Benner said. The victory keeps the Kicks rolling in the spring portion of their season. They are 3-1 in the spring, following a 4-4 fall session, for a 7-5 overall record. The next game for the Park City hooters will be Saturday at noon on the Park City High School field against the University of Utah. After two previous games scheduled sched-uled for Park City ended in postponement, the team hopes Saturday will dawn with a dry field and clear skies. |
