J"U!" ," HES by Randy Hanskat Due to some unpredictable weather and a variety of competing events in Salt Lake, the turnout for this year's Spring Run Off wasn't as high as last year, but the competition was good nonetheless. none-theless. George Katz of Salt Lake ended up winning for the men, while Park City's own Madonna Harris outran the other women. Pat Manning of the Park City Running Club, one of the sponsors of the race,-along race,-along with the Prospector Athletic Club, Dairy Queen, s and Wolfe's, said this year's attendance of 75 runners was about half of last year's. Manning said the Run Off went as "smooth as glass," thanks to the clear and cold day. "It was the best weather we had all weekend," he said. This year's times were slower than last year's, which didn't surprise Manning. Man-ning. He said the cold weather was a factor, as was the length and severity of the winter. "People haven't had all that much training yet this seaso.., ' Manning said. Still, no one seemed to have much trouble with the four mile course which started at Wolfe's, went up to the resort, back behind the golf course, into Thaynes, then Park Meadows, past the Dairy Queen, and ended at the Prospector Athletic Club. All entrants finished the race and, win or not, all were eligible for the many prize drawings at the finish area, j The top three finishers for the men were led by Katz, in the 25-29 age group, with a first place time of 22:55. In second was Howard Ingle, also of Salt Lake, at 23:51, tops in the 30-34 bracket. In third was Ed Hagerman of Timberline in the 40-49 bracket, finishing in 24:01. Harris' time of 27:59 clinched the women's division. divi-sion. Harris was in the 25-29 group. In second was Judy Hagerman, Ed's wife, at 28:15 in the 40-49 bracket. In third, making it a Park City clean sweep, was Bev Gray at 29:03. Gray, an accomplished Ride & Tie competitor, raced in the 30-34 bracket.
