Show Dannon Races Underway i Kerry Lynch and Kate Freeman led a U.S. Ski Team sweep of the Dannon West Cross Country Ski series sprint races here on Wednesday Wed-nesday at the Golf Course. All of the races Wednesday were sprints, although some of them were somewhat unorthodox. Besides the 2 kilometer sprint runs, from which the eventual winners were determined, there was also a pass and out race. This was accomplished by splitting splitt-ing the field around a circle and any skier who was passed by a faster skier had to withdraw from the competition. compe-tition. The last skier or skiers left at the end of the five minute time limit won. Phil Peck of Hanover, New Hampshire and Kate Freeman, Free-man, from Hancock, Michigan Michi-gan won the event. The other "new" sprint was called the Flying 500. Skiers lined up for a mad dash for 250 kilometers, turned around, and raced back. Despite what appeared to be a potential disaster, all skiers finished the race with no apparent injuries. In the "regular" races, Lynch, from Granby, colo., won with a time of 14:29:1, followed by teammate Lat Straley, from Wyoming with a time of 14:36:3 and Phil Peck (14:50:9). In the women's division. Freeman won with a time of 17:29:5 by edging USST teammate Joanne Musolf, of Wenatchee, Wa. (17:38:1). The racers continued Wednesday Wed-nesday with normal crosscountry cross-country events at the Brighton Bright-on Ski Touring Center track. |
