All it takes is a little help from someone who cares to bring a smile and the sport of skiing to a handicapped friend. Park West Hosting Handicap Fund-Raiser Park West is hosting a fund raiser Saturday that just about everybody can afford. $5 gets you in the door for an early evening of music, fun and food beginning at 4:30 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. All proceeds from the event are slated to fund the resort's special education ski program. Program director, Beverly Carhart says the money will be used to purchase special equipment that enables handicapped persons of all ages to ski. "We'll be purchasing a special sled that enables anybody in a wheelchair or paralyzed from the waist down to ski down the mountain. It's really the greatest piece of equipment I've seen yet and it really works. We also need to purchase outriggers for small children, special bras and bibs and other special equipment to enable handicapped handi-capped persons to ski," says Carhart. The event started out as a small fund raiser but Carhart says community response has been so overwhelming that they're going to have to form a special foundation. "Just about every merchant in Park City has donated a door prize, volunteers are bringing homemade food and several kegs of beer have been donated including one from our own ski patrol-it's just incredible," she said. In addition to the door prizes special drawings will be offered at $1 a ticket. The drawings will be held between bet-ween 8 and 9 p.m. Music will be courtesy of the Silver Creek band whose country rhythms have become a source of joy for locals. So even if you have something better to do Saturday night there are a lot of youngsters who would appreciate you tossing in your hat at Park West and joining in the fun in support of a very special cause. |
