Show DEATH OF CARLISLE. John G. Carlisle is dead At one time he was the most powerful statesman within the Democratic party, but after the Bryan campaign cam-paign he was sent into obscurity.- During Cleveland's second term, Carlisle, as secretary of the treasury, became an aggressive gold-standard advocate and antagonized antagon-ized many of the strong men of his party in his attitude in opposition opposi-tion to silver coinage. He was in full accord with the Cleveland administration ad-ministration and later, when the great split in Democracy came, he was accepted as a leader of the gold wing. Thereafter he ceased to be a factor in politics. Carlisle was a man of great intellectuality but, like men of his as6ertiveness, he would brook no opposition and always strenuously contended for his views, conceding nothing, demanding everything. |
