Show ROOStVELT He Places Col. George Harvey in the Famous Ananias Club New York, Aug. 2. Colonel Roosevelt Roose-velt yesterday added another distinguished distin-guished member to the Ananias cb;b in the person or Colonel George Harvey, Har-vey, editor of the North American Re- lew. The Initiation took place In the office of-fice of the Outlook, of which Colonel Roosevelt Is contributing editor, and the new member, while not actually present, was put through with much vim and considerable bounce. While Colonel Roosevelt did not use the "shorter and uglier word" in connection con-nection with Colonel Harvey, his language lan-guage was distinctly blunt and plain. The teoponlng of the club, which was closed Just prior to Mr. Roosevelt's Roose-velt's departure for Africa, was I brought about through an article In the August number of the North American Review, entitled "Is Roosevelt Roose-velt an Asret or a Liability?" and ' which was signed "The Editors." In a paragraph at the top of page 151, ! this sentence occurs: "But recently ; Roosevelt, the man, declared that If a 1 national election were to be held next 1 November, he undoubtedly would be ! the Republican candidate and would I win." When Colonel Reiosevelt saw this. bis eyes snapped and bli teeth clicked ins he almost sluutod: "That Is simply a falsehood; I have never said anything like that " It was pointed out to Colonel Roosevelt Roose-velt that Colonel Harvey evidently meant to convey the impression that be could be forced into accepting the ivimlnation. P,y that time Colonel I Roosevelt appeared extremely angry; and, again repeating that he had I never made the statement ottributed to him, made a rush for the waiting elevator. ! New York, Aug. 2. "It may be unseemly un-seemly for, me to engage with Mr. Roosevelt In a controversy Involving a question of veracity. That which I wrote, of course, is true,' said Colonel George Harey at his home at Deal Lake, N. J., last night. |
