Show REPUBLICANS ARE DENOUNCED! WASHINGTON, June 27. State- -ments of Republican leaders in the: house that their party had saved th I people $1,500,000,000 by eliminating l "Democratic extravagance ' rrom sup- j ply bills passed by the house this session ses-sion were denounced on the floor today to-day by Representative Kitchln, Demo- i crat. of North Carolina, as "master pieces of political deception." The former Democratic house leader discussed at some length a statement given out last week by Republican ' Leader Mondell and declared "it was rich in false impressions, wrong inferences in-ferences and bald misstatements of : fact," ' During the last session the Democratic Demo-cratic house passed every' needed war measure and public supply bill. This' I enactment was not completed, but why? Their defeat was caused so L I by the detestable, indecent filibuster made by the Republicans in the senate sen-ate during the closing days of the ses-I ses-I sion. "Now the Republicans come and say their efficient work has made passage I of the bills possible." Taking up each of the supply meas-lures meas-lures in detail, Mr. Kitchln declared I the reductions which had been made in them were due, not to Republican I I economy, but to Democratic efficiency I in running the various departments I "It is said that the Republicans saved $400,000,000 in the army bill 'alone," he said, 'when in reality they j didn't save the people a single penny , in that measure, nor in any other. The ' $400,000,000 was made possible by the war department's splendid work in 'carrying forward demobilization faster fast-er even than any one considered pos-i pos-i slble last spring " The sundry civil bill was "an ac- tual increase" over that measure as ; framed In the last democratic congress, con-gress, despite a seeming reduction of $384,000,000, Mr Kitchin declared. Replying to Representative Little, ! Republican, of Kansas, the former I Democratic leader admitted that reduc jtions had been made. Several Republicans vainly seeking ! to question the speaker .efforts to gain I longer time for him was denied on objections ob-jections from the Republican side. I Republican Leader Mondell read his l statement regarding savings to the house and declared it "was accurate," Chairman Kahn of the military committee, com-mittee, interrupted to say that the secretary of war was still demanding an army of 509,000 and asking for supplies sup-plies for that number, "when he knows the house has refused to give it to him." 'Right at this hour," Mr. Mondell ! declared, "the shipping board and the navy are lobbying at the very door of I the senate to have the senate restore every dollar stricken out by the house I and in some cases make Increases." |
