The Antilles, a freight and passenger steamship of 5,786 tons gross, owned by the Southern South-ern Pacific Steamship company (Morgan (Mor-gan line), was one of tho crack American Ameri-can coast liners. She plied between New Orleans and New York and had vA carried thousands of persons to tho IH Mardi Gras celebration in the south- crn city. J The vessel was taken over by the jH government as a transport early in the IH war. Captain H. F. Boyde, master of IH the Antilles, retained his command when the vessel entered the govern-ment govern-ment service as did most of his offi- cers. Tho crew, as recruited by the ) jH quartermaster's department, included , IH many of the men who had served on . the steamship when she was in the 1 IH merchant service. The Antilles wag IH built by the Cramps at Philadelphia in 1907. She was 421 feet long with a beam of 53 feet and a depth of 37 |
