Show LEONARD GIVES BRITT0NBEAT1NG Lightweight Champion Goes Out of His Class to Meet Welterweight. HARLEM SPORTING CLUB. "NEW YORK, Oct. 19. Benny Leonard, light, weight champion, went out of his class tonight to give Jack Britton, the former form-er welterweight champion, a ten-round ten-round beating. But before the end of the bout Leonard knew he had been in a fight. Britton gave the best he had. but the youth and stamina of his younger opponent op-ponent was too much for him. Leonard Leon-ard won a majority of the rounds, "in the seventh round Leo"hard came near adding another knockout to his credit I when he had Britton groggy from a punch in the stomach, but failed to follow fol-low up his advantage. In tho next round the fighters stood toc-to-too and swapped punches. Leonard Leon-ard had Britton almost going in the flnal round. Britton tipped the beam at 139 pounds, the weight agreed upon. Leonard Leon-ard scaled at 133. PaurPollock stopped Jack Bernstein in the third round of the second preliminary. pre-liminary. Pollock is a Californian who recently came east to earn a living in the ring. He is no chicken, being about the same age as Eddie Curley, but he can hit harder than Eddie. Dummy Jordan of Cincinnati and Frankie Adams of New York went on for the semi-final. Adams fell to the Uoor in the third round, claiming he was hit low. . Tho referee refused to allow his claim and ordered him out of the ring. Britton was the first to enter the ring, followed a few seconds later by Leonard. Both received hearty ovations. ova-tions. Round 1 Leonard started by hooking hook-ing three lefts to the face. He followed with a right to the jaw a!nd brought two lefts, to the neck. Britton missed a left and Leonard planted two solid lefts to the wind. Britton claimed it was low, 'but the referee refused to allow al-low the claim. They mixed up. Britton came out of the clinch with his mouth cut. i ney sparred at tne ben. Round 2 Leonard went tearing after aft-er Britton in this round, but Jack's cleverness was much in evidence. Toward To-ward the end of the round Leonard sent in half a dozen smashes to the head which made Britton back ground. Leonard's round. Round 3 Leonard sent two lefts to the car and another to tho head. Britton Brit-ton clinched. After the break Leonard sent Britton to the ropes and slammed two lefts to the mouth. Britton walked around for a few seconds and at the bell Leonard swung a right to the jaw. Leonard's round. Round 4 All during the fourth round Leonard chased Britton around the ring, landing dozens of lefts to the ehad and body. Just before the boll Jack soaked home a hard left to the body that slowed Leonard own. It was tho first hard blow Britton. had driven home. Leonard's round. Round 5 Britton missed a left hook. Leonard sent three lefts to the face. He then sent another hard left to the wind. Leonard sent a fusillade of blows to the face. Just before the bell Britton sent a stinging left to the wind. Leonard's round. Round 6 Both men began to ease up in the pace they had set. As in tho former rounds, Leonard did most ofj the leading. Once Britton hit low but it was unintentional. Leonard's round by a shade. , I Round 7 In the first part of the seventh sev-enth Leonard sent in a terrific left to the stomach and Britton staggered through the round. Leonard might have scored a knock-out had he sailed in, but waited too long, to put over a decisive punch. Leonard's round. Round S. The eighth round developed devel-oped Into a boxing match. Leonard sent in two blows to Britton's one. The men were slowing up considerably. Round 9 The ninth round was Britton's Brit-ton's all the way. Jack jabbed left after left to the champion's face but did not seem to have much steam behind be-hind the blows. Round. 10. The lads forgot all about science in the last round and stood toe to toe swapping punches. In the middle mid-dle of the round Leonard sent two lefts and a right that almost floored Britton. Jack soon recovered and at tho bell the boys were swapping t'heir I punches just as fast as their arms would go. |
