Show THIS TO CONSIDER ABOUT YOUR CAR It Is a good idea to see that your muffler is kept clean, for in this way you will save gasoline. A clogged muffler muf-fler creatos a back pressure which reduces re-duces the efficiency of the engine. Tap the muffler with a stick to looson the deposits and the exhaust will do tb' rest. I It is not necessary to inject keru sene all in the cylinders to remove carbon and release the ' rings from sticking. The present-day gasolino I so near kerosene that the fuel usei' will accomplish any 9iich result n While water dripped into the air intake in-take pipe of the carbureter and permitted per-mitted to pass into the cylinder will undoubtedly tend to remove carbon, it is a dangerous proceeding. It is apt to find its way to the valve stems and cause them to rust and stick. ', There are only two ways to remove carbon have it burned or scraped I out and grind the valves after the operation. When brakes do not hold it is, usually usual-ly because tho surface of the bands have become hard and smooth. Cloan them with a thin brush and keroseni'. rinse off with gasoline, and permit them to dry. Then spread on lubricating lubricat-ing oil, being sure every spot is covered. cov-ered. This will raise tho fiber, soften soft-en the material and the brakes will be effective. This should be done at night, for It will bo dangerous to attempt using us-ing the car until tho oil has had a chance to do its work. It is impossible to keep the hands clean when making repairs on the machine. ma-chine. A simple and economical way in which to cleanse thorn is as follows: Mix. a small quantity of sawdust and lubricating oil together and rub thoroughly thor-oughly into the pores of tho skin. The oil should then be removed by wiping tho hands with a cloth which has been saturated with a little gasoline gaso-line or kerosene. This should be followed by the ordinary or-dinary wash with soap and water. It is poor practice to attempt to remove re-move the dirt from the hnnds by bathing bath-ing them in gasoline, as this will cause some of the matter to become deeply imbedded in the skin. When a clutch starts slipping badly it Is needless to race the engine in the hope that the car will move faster. Rather operate the engine slowly with a slight change of speed, so as to attempt at-tempt to cause the flywheel to carry the clutch around. When the engine is raced it makes matters worse all around, for tho clutch does not hold and there is possibility of burning It up altogether. Do not neglect to inspect valve clearance clear-ance at least once a month. If valve lifters arb out of adjustment, power Is being lost without its being noticed. Wait until motor cools and adjust them to one-sixty-fourth of an inch. If they are too wide open they become noisy; if too far closed the motor loses compression. In both cases there Is a serious loss of power. To protect a Ford car from theft is an easy matter. Some of the following follow-ing suggestions may be applied to oth er cars as well. Removing the switch koy is not enough as every thief knows that It is only necessary to Insert In-sert a small screwdriver into one of the notches In order to turn it readily. The key should be' removed in all cases, but other precautions must bo taken as well. Disconnect battery and magneto wires and take them with you. If theso are too long cut pieces out of them, making them too short to reach the proper terminals. Run them to separate sepa-rate binding posts on tho dash and run short lengths of wire from these binding posts to the regular binding posts. These short lengths may be taken with you. But the thief can connect con-nect across by using one of the timer wires, causing one cylinder to miss explosion ex-plosion a matter of no great moment to him. Some drivers favor a switch In the tool box, one controlling both battery and magneto circuits a "double-pole" switch as it Is called. But If the thief has time to investigate he will see these wires leading into the tool box and put other wires in place of them. A similar Idea is embodied in a lock switch which carries the primary wires to a switch on the dash which can be locked with a Yale key. This is good enough if the hood is kept locked. But as it rarely Is, the thief simply removes the wires from tho back and twists them together and the car goes with him. Lack of attention to the way the rear wheels are running Is a source of subsequent financial loss to automo-bllists. automo-bllists. It seems to us that wo'seo nowadays more care with' wabbly rear wheels than ever before. This may be because the demountable rim lugs are not fully cinched up, so that the wheel I runs unovenly. It all makes for wear on tires and shortens their existenco unduly. From the back it gives the car, as It moves away, a sort bt pacing pac-ing gait. Tho front wheels are running run-ning in one line and the rear wheels are wabbling In another. This racking rack-ing action racks the souls of tho au-tomobillsts.' |
