The homeward bound army transport An-phion An-phion had a two-hours' running fight with a German submarine S00 miles off the Atlantic coast last Saturday morning in which eight men on the American ship were wounded, two fatally. fa-tally. The transport arrived hero today to-day and reported that so far as those about could determine the submarine I was not badly damaged, if at all. The first shots carried away the An-phion's An-phion's wireless and she was unable to call for help. The naval gun crows replied to the enemy shots and the transport crowded on all steam, final-ly final-ly drawing away from the submarine. The transport's superstructure was riddled rid-dled with shells and shrapnel. The Anphion formerly was the North Gorman Gor-man Lloyd liner Koln and is of 7409 gross tons and has a speed of twelve and a half knots an hour. She was seized at Boston when this country entered the war and after being repaired re-paired by the shipping board was turned over to the army as a transport. |
