Show 01 BOY SCOUT RAISES 515,800 BYTHESALE OFBOiS The Boy Scouts, who have been selling sell-ing bonds and thrift stamps during the past week on streot corners, have made a praiseworthy showing. A speech was given today by Alvln Leishman, an Ogden scout, to boost bond sales and a good sized crowd gathered at Twenty-fifth street and Washington avenue to hear the young man. Leishman has sold $15,900 worth of bonds himself, achieving quite a record. rec-ord. Since last Saturday he has sold 142 bonds. The speech delivered by the young man follows: "Tho fourth Liberty loan Is the greatest financial undertaking in history. his-tory. Never before has a government undertaken to borrow so much money from the people. England's last loan was $5,000,000,000. but if we succeed in our present loan we will pass it by 20 per cent "If tho people of America are going to show the kaiser that we are heart and soul behind the president, we must oversubscribe tho $6,000,000,000 that the government is raising. This means that absolutely everybody must do all within his power. A person's bit wnn't rln "The American people should stop and think how much six billion Is. Wo can grasp 1000 all right One million is one thousand times one thousand and six billion is 6000 times 1,000,000. This is one-third as much as the entire amount spent by our government from 1776 to 1914. Six billion dollars is 300 times as much aa the cost of the Phil-lipine Phil-lipine islands. Now we'vo got to raise this tremendous amount of money In two days. "Few people realize why such a large amount must be subscribed. They don't realise the enormous cost of things. One sixteen-inch gun on a railway rail-way truck mount ready for service In France costs a half million dollars and tho shells it fires are worth $1000 each The ammunition alone for the first 2i" hours of a drive on a ten mile front costs over $18,000,000. Do you seo where ihe money goes, why we must r.; raise such a tremendous amount as $6,000,000,000. "There are 100,000.000 people in the I United States, so wo must subscribe ? $60 each in order to raise the six billion. bil-lion. So If there are four in your fam- I ily you should buy at least $250 worth I of bonds. If you don't, somebody ff'11 have to buy that much more than tbclr f share to make up for you. ' ' "If we don't raise the six billion. ; wo li nave to slacken our speea i"u ; spend a little longer to drive the Ger- ,' mans back home. More soldiers will have to be killed, and they may be our : own brothers. So lot's spend our mon- ( ey nnd save their lives. The more we ; buy, the quicker the war will be over. , j "Tho kaiser will have a good lausn ( f if wo fall down on this. Can we afford ; to let him laugh? Not by any means, j This peace drive of the Germans j j be merely intended to knock the l'ro : out of our Liberty loan drive. If we. j don't subscribe to tho limit, he'll thins his peace talk has pulled the wool over 1 our eves. This Is another reason why . j- we must buy $60 worth of bonds r. apiece. E |
