Show II Sfarangler Lewis Wins I . Promotion by Display I of Courage in Camp B I '.NEW YORK, Oct, 19 Probably one j j of the quickest promotions on record in the army has been that .of Ed. "Strangler" Lewis, now a top sergeant at Camp Grant Lewis gained tho promotion, pro-motion, thanks to a display of courage, the first day he entered the camp. The famous wrestler was lined up with hundreds of other draftees, baggage bag-gage in hand, when two husky uniformed uni-formed men looking tho lino over started making fun of tho odd -looking recruits. Giving Lewis the once over, one of them remarked: "Pipe the fat bartender." while the other laughingly said: "He sure looks like a prize porker." Lewis flushed with rage, dropped his grip and walking over to the first of the camp jesters picked him up bodily, twisted him upside up-side down and bounced his head on the ground, leavipg him there while he took a headlock on the other and threw him ten feet over the ground and then asked the onlookers if they wanted to sample any of his work. Getting no response Lewis again joined join-ed the line. While the two privates wore pulling themselves together the officer in charge stepped up to the" gathering and lauded Lewis for his action, saying say-ing that the spirit he showed was the kind the army was looking for and hoped the rest of the line-up were gifted with the same brand of courage. In fortv-eight hours from the time Lewis entered the camp he was made a corporal and in two weeks was promoted pro-moted to sergeant and later top ser- Lewis's entry into the camp caused much gossip around the cantonment and now ho is numbered among the most popular men in uniform. It Is the big fellow's ambition to lead' a company over the top, and if he does, it is safe to say the men under him will be imbuedvvith the same courage he displayed- on his initial visit to Camp Grant. |
